About this product

Product Information

First published in 1899, The Awakening 's engagement with taboo issues of female sexuality and infidelity prompted a flurry of damning reviews that sent the book out of print and into obscurity for several decades. However, it is now hailed as a key early feminist text and has become one of the most widely studied works of American literature. This sourcebook combines accessible commentary with reprinted documents to provide the ideal introduction to the novel. *'Contexts' provides biographical information on Chopin and explores 1890s American society to reveal the contextual backdrop to her work. The editors pay particular attention to Chopin's Louisiana Creole heritage and to the expectations of women in this era. *'Interpretations' begins with an overview of the critical reception of the novel and then introduces extracts from important early reviews and contemporary criticism. Readers are carefully guided through a range of crucial issues from Chopin's treatment of female sexuality to the influence of Darwinism on her writing. *'Key Passages', reproduces selected chapters of the original text, along with extensive commentary. These commentaries equip readers to make connections with the critical and contextual issues raised earlier in the sourcebook and to initiate engaged, informed, individual new analyses of Chopin's text. A concluding 'Further Reading' section is provided for those wishing to extend their work on the novel. Offering a perfectly judged selection of reprinted materials and insightful, refreshingly clear commentary, this volume will greatly enrich any reading of The Awakening .

Fantastic seller! My item took longer than normal to arrive but that's due to them sending me the wrong dvd. Not to worry though, I contacted them and they arranged for the correct dvd to be sent out. My item has now arrived and the dvd was in excellent condition (brand new as described) and it was very well packaged. I would also like to say that the value for money is excellent. I highly recommend this seller, thank you so much! The issue with the wrong dvd was quickly rectified .

Book arrived safely packaged in perfect order. Item as described, new. Thank you Rarewaves Outlet. Fascinating book, great addition to my collection. Great price. Would recommended this seller. No communication needed with seller, so don't know what to rate with regards to communication (please dont take lack of feedback on this matter as a negative). Thanks again.

This vinyl is really reasonably priced and I love that it is one of the more unusual colours. It arrived well packaged, undamaged and looks as described. It arrived late, due to Royal Mail's Festive rush, but was dispatched by the seller really quickly. When I contacted them to ask where it was, they replied really quickly with a helpful solution. Such good customer service, so strongly recommend. Really happy with my purchase.
