For over two thousand years, scholars have called Herodotus "The Father of History", because in his account of the war between Greece and Persia in the Fifth Century B.C.E., he initiated the(then new)approach of examining the underlying and immediate causes of the war and integrating multiple sources of information into a comprehensive narrative. In the second half of the Twentieth Century, there has been a growing movement that applauds Herodotus' writings as literature as opposed to history,at least in the modern sense. Whatever the outcome of that debate, Herodotus is perhaps the most readable of all of the ancient authors, and David Grene's, the most readable and up to date translation available.
When I learned in my other studies of the great philosophers and Herodotus name came up as the first historian to write about that time period, I did not expect to be able to find a written source by a premiere translator to fill in my knowledge. It reads great and it is a thrill to read about what life must have been like.
