About this product

Product Information

More than 80 per cent of Australians killed during the First World War lost their lives on the main battlefield, facing the formidable force of the main enemy. The battlefield in question was the Western Front where Australian and New Zealand troops were constantly engaged from early 1916 until the Armistice in late 1918. This five part series explores the stories of the ANZACs on the Western Front, from their first engagement in a small trench raid until their final triumph as an instrumental part of the '100 Day advance that led to victory. A thorough and insightful investigation into the strategy of warfare, supported by detailed on-screen graphics, archival footage and oral history, presenter Neil Pigot (For Valour, Breaker Morant: The Retrial) and eminent military historian Dr Peter Pedersen explain where, how and why the ANZACs fought in France and Belgium 100 years ago.

    • Standard Title, nothing new there.

I realise that there is a limit to the information presented due to time and space considerations. But the overall presentation left a lot of facts out and overall was only marginally relevant to my particular interest; that being, the First Battle of Bullecourt fought on the 11th April 1917. Sadly we lost this battle and i presume that this is why it was virtually glossed over. Ce la vie, but having visited Bullecourt a couple of times to remember my family's loss, and having accessed the war diaries of the particular Battalions involved and other government information on this particular battle previously, It presented no new knowledge and sadly I'm not even convinced that the presenters treated this portion of the film critically. I accept that this particular tragedy is not spoken of ...

    • ANZAC Battlefields DVD

The two narrators use maps superimposed on tables and walking in the actual towns in the present day to explain the major tactics and results of the major battles the Aussies were involved in on the Western Front. Its an informative and entertaining overview of the battles and the conditions that were faced by the Aussies.
