Just as punk was mutating into new wave and the '70s were coming to a close, Iron Maiden came onto the British music scene as part of a movement known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Named for a medieval torture instrument, Iron Maiden was founded by bass player Steve Harris and released their self-titled debut in 1980. Roughly produced by Will Malone, the songs were influenced by the group's fascination with horror films ("Phantom Of The Opera") and the macabre ("Transylvania," "Prowler"). Driven by Harris' driving bass and Paul Di'Anno's raspy vocals, songs such as the moody "Remember Tomorrow" and the more aggressive "Charlotte The Harlot" also featured the melodic interplay of guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton. "Running Free" was the album's anthem and landed Maiden a slot on Top Of The Pops, where in their refusal to lip-synch, they became the first band to play live on the show since The Who's 1972 appearance.

Powerful debut album. Still one of their best.
From the opening strains of "Prowler" to the explosive climax of "Iron Maiden" this album ROCKS. Released amid the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) explosion of 1980, Iron Maiden stood head and shoulders above any of the competition (Diamond Head, Saxon, Praying Mantis, Def Leppard etc.). Bassist Steve Harris has always bemoaned the production on the album, but the fact is that it sounds raw and fresh, with a less clinical approach than later albums. This is apparent especially on "Phantom of the Opera" where during the expansive instrumental section squeaks and whines can be heard from the guitars which give the impression that the band are doing an "as is" live recording with amps which go up to 11! And where did THAT riff come from? ... From the opening strains of "Prowler" to the explosive climax of "Iron Maiden" this album ROCKS. Highlights are "Prowler" (dubious lyrics about self flagellation aside), "Remember Tomorrow", first single "Running Free" (much slower than the live performances from this period, and with an infectious drum intro), two beautiful guitar solos during "Strange World", the macabre "Iron Maiden" (sounding more punk than anything else the band have done), and of course the awe inspiring "Phantom of the Opera" (if the first two minutes of this song don't give you an adrenaline rush I would check that you have a pulse). Included on the ECD is "Sanctuary" which was originally released as a single after the release of the album, but not included on the LP or original CD releases. ...and I love the enhanced cover. I'm sure Derek Riggs would approve.

The Begining
With the release of this album, Iron Maiden set off to rule all of heavy metal; not to mention the world. From start to finish there isn't a bad song on this album. With the raw sound of galloping guitars that leave perfect timing for harminizing leads, a thight rhythm section that doesn't miss a beat(no punn intended), and the raspy vocal range of the singer makes this album one of the greatest debut's of all time. Iron Maiden has since released six to seven more albums. Each one with their own concept. This is my third copy of this album on cd. I've had this on cassette and LP. And if it wasn't for Ipod I would end up purchasing more copies.With the release of this album, Iron Maiden set off to rule all of heavy metal; not to mention the world.
