Darrell Stark's My Journey as I Remember is a well-written, honest account of Stark's childhood during the Depression and his experiences as an infantryman (machine gunner) during the battle for Bataan in World War II and his 2 1/2 years as a prisoner of the Japanese. It is the story of a boy growing up in a strong, loving family and of the hardships that family endured during the 1930's. In a sense, it's a chronicle of the American family's experience of those hard times. From the love and resilience of his family, Stark developed character traits that made him a good soldier and helped him to survive the terrible suffering at Bataan and in the POW camps in which he was interned. Stark's style is clear and candid and, above all else, honest and thoroughly human. This is the best kind of military history--not just the strategies and logistics of war, but the experience of war by an individual soldier. Highly recommended.Read full review
