Much Better than Expected
This was a very inexpensive lens and I was expecting the image quality to be mediocre at best. However I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is. I'm using it on a full frame K1 body; auto focus is fast and accurate, albeit somewhat noisy. Yes, it is a little soft wide open but sharp at f8 and color rendition is excellent. There is some color fringing easily corrected in post processing (or in camera if shooting JPEG's and the camera body has built in lens corrections). Construction is typical of the F/FA line plastic but serviceable. The front element of this lens rotates during focusing, a hindrance when using a CPL filter or petal style lens hood. Speaking of lens hoods, I recommend using one (circular type) as the front element is prone to picking up glare without one. All in ... This is the second F35-80mm I have, one is fitted to my Pentax K3 (DSLR with 24MP APS-C CMOS) having an effective focal length 50-120mm. The other one is fitted to my film camera Pentax MX (35mm). For the money (about $35) The lens has excellent performance, it is quite sharp with good contrast, of course at the F5.6 you need either a bright day or a flash.(usually I do not go greater than 200ISO). With the 35mm format this is a very good 'standard' zoom lens. This is a low cost lens but overall a very nice lens for the money, for anything better probably will cost 100's of $.
