    lively chicago ; excellent leads

    I like 'Chicago'. I've never seen it on stage, but I have the film on DVD. This CD of the London production lives up fully to that, with excellent leads (Ruthie Henshall as Roxie, Ute Lemper as Velma, Henry Goodman as Billy Flynn and Nigel Planer as Amos) and a good company. Musically it's first-rate - all the principals have good voices and characterise their songs well, the ensemble work is spot-on and the band's very good. It is, in my view, a musical with a few very good songs and a larger number of workmanlike ones, so hearing without seeing is not the best way to appreciate this show, but this CD makes the very best of it and I recommend it.

    It is with Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper as Velma and Roxie and they are both superb singers, this is, however a mono CD which detracts from the full sound enjoyment. The songs are all brilliant. I saw the musical and fall in love...
