Das Seegebiet uber dem Calypso Deep (5189 m) in der Ionischen See wurde auf die Eignung als Standort eines Kubikkilometer grossen Neutrino-Teleskops (KM3NeT) untersucht. Hierbei wurden die Hydrologie des Seegebiets und die prokaryotische Diversitat bestimmt. Ein Fokus lag auf dem Nachweis von biolumineszenten und biokorrosiven Bakterien. Daruber hinaus konnten die Variationen der prokaryotischen Diversitat in der Tiefe, unabhangig von der Temperatur, ermittelt werden. Die Konzentrationen der Nahrstoffe, sowie die Bakteriendichte zeigen, dass das Untersuchungsgebiet extrem oligotroph ist. Das Vorkommen biolumineszenter Bakterien als auch das trophie-abhangigen Vorkommen der [NiFe] Hydrogenasen unterstutzen diese Klassifizierung des Gewassers. Im Bereich des deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), kommen Ammonium- oxidierende Crenarchaea vor, die einen wesentlichen Teil der lichtunabhangigen Primarproduktion leisten und die oberen Schichten mit Nitrit bzw. Nitrat versorgen. Im DCM sind einige Euryarchaea der Gruppe II Partikel-assoziierte. Euryarchaea der Gruppe III sind in dieser Studie zum ersten Mal als partikel-assoziiert identifiziert worden.
