Durch das in den letzten Jahren deutlich zunehmende Aufkommen von Start-Up Unternehmen (Start-Ups) und dem damit verbundenen Finanzierungsbedarf steigt die Notwendigkeit, diese Unternehmen zu bewerten. Die Bewertung von Start-Ups resultiert vor allem aus dem Interesse des/der Grunder/s eines Unternehmens oder externer Investoren und Fremdkapitalgeber (Vgl. Rudolf/Witt (2002), S. 26). Die Bewertung von Start-Ups ist von enormer Wichtigkeit, wenn sie von externen Kapitalgebern im Tausch gegen Unternehmensanteile finanziert, verkauft oder an der Boerse notiert werden (Vgl. Hering/Olbrich/Steinrucke (2006), S. 406). Die langfristige Etablierung von Start-Ups ist fur die Wirtschaft von grosser Bedeutung, da davon das Beschaftigungswachstum, der Wettbewerb, die Innovationen und Exportmoeglichkeiten abhangig sind (Vgl. Cassar (2004), S. 263). Der fur Start-Ups gerade in der Anfangsphase notwendige Kapitalbedarf hangt von der Bereitschaft der Kapitalgeber ab, die zu einem grossen Teil in Abhangigkeit zu den Ergebnissen der Unternehmensbewertung steht. Da Finanzintermediare, seien es Familie, Freunde oder Venture Capitalists, ein enormes Risiko mit der finanziellen Unterstutzung eines Start-Ups eingehen, ist die Berucksichtigung dieses Risikos innerhalb der Unternehmensbewertung bei der Bestimmung des Diskontierungszinssatzes mit einzubeziehen. Das Risiko bemisst sich am Erfolg oder Misserfolg des Start-Ups im Zeitablauf. Der Verlauf der Entwicklungsphasen eines Start-Ups ist jedoch schwer prognostizierbar.
