"Marvelous...Once just an obscure name, Browning, the Mormon whose weapons won wars, emerges as one of America's greatest inventors." --Alexander Rose, New York Times bestselling author of Washington's Spies and American Rifle
Synopsis
This first major biography of "the Thomas Edison of guns," John Moses Browning, brings to life a visionary inventor whose extraordinary array of firearms has shaped American culture and armed the world's militaries for more than a century. Few people are aware that Browning-a tail, modest, cerebral man born in 1855 and raised as a Mormon-invented the modern pistol along with hunting rifles and shotguns still sold today. Embodying the tradition of self-made, self-educated American geniuses, Browning possessed a remarkable gift for thinking in three dimensions. He designed machine guns for World War I that proved decisive in World War II and played a major role in winning the Battle of Britain. Incredibly, his weapons are still relied on by American troops in the twenty-first century. Sweeping, lively, and brilliantly told, this fascinating book introduces a little-known American legend whose impact on history ranks with that of the Wright brothers, Henry Ford, and other pioneers of innovation. Book jacket., A "well-researched and very readable new biography" (The Wall Street Journal) of "the Thomas Edison of guns," a visionary inventor who designed the modern handgun and whose awe-inspiring array of firearms helped ensure victory in numerous American wars and holds a crucial place in world history.Few people are aware that John Moses Browning--a tall, humble, cerebral man born in 1855 and raised as a Mormon in the American West--was the mind behind many of the world-changing firearms that dominated more than a century of conflict. He invented the design used in virtually all modern pistols, created the most popular hunting rifles and shotguns, and conceived the machine guns that proved decisive not just in World Wars I and II but nearly every major military action since. Yet few in America knew his name until he was into his sixties. Now, author Nathan Gorenstein brings firearms inventor John Moses Browning to vivid life in this riveting and revealing biography. Embodying the tradition of self-made, self-educated geniuses (like Lincoln and Edison), Browning was able to think in three dimensions (he never used blueprints) and his gifted mind produced everything from the famous Winchester "30-30" hunting rifle to the awesomely effective machine guns used by every American aircraft and infantry unit in World War II. The British credited Browning's guns with helping to win the Battle of Britain. His inventions illustrate both the good and bad of weapons. Sweeping, lively, and brilliantly told, this fascinating book that "gun collectors and historians of armaments will cherish" (Kirkus Reviews) introduces a little-known legend whose impact on history ranks with that of the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford., A "well-researched and very readable new biography" ( The Wall Street Journal ) of "the Thomas Edison of guns," a visionary inventor who designed the modern handgun and whose awe-inspiring array of firearms helped ensure victory in numerous American wars and holds a crucial place in world history. Nice book at a good price. Only issue I had with this Seller is the fact they use a "third party" shipping company called OSM Worldwide, that is very poor at their job. This third party caused a delay of 3 to 4 days at least in my receiving the book I purchased. I have contacted the Seller and made them aware of this issue. Should you decide to do business with this Seller just be aware that your book may take longer than usual to arrive.

This book was the completely wrong item (BUYERS BEWARE - STOCK IMAGE IS *NOT* THE EDITION YOU WILL RECEIVE!), seller communication was awful (didn't answer any questions, barely legible English), shipping was extremely late (sent false tracking number then actually shipped it 2+ weeks post-order date), and it was poorly packaged (book corners bent up since shipped in a plastic bag with no padding or support whatsoever). Awful experience with this seller in every imaginable way.

Item is just as described, although it’s pictured larger than actual size; which is the size of a deck of flash cards. Also disappointed that the item was mailed to wrong address or customer mix up & no one responded to my email or apologized or explained why item was sent somewhere else. I don’t know if this is a reflection of seller or seller’s employees? I had a project to use it on & just moved forward. Thank you seller.
