Since he turned to writing poetry in the late 1950s, Ian Hamilton Finlay has developed a personal aesthetic where context is as important as content. Never afraid to defend his ideas, he frequently provokes controversy as he challenges the observer to confront truths. This double issue traces the evolution of this aesthetic through first-hand accounts of the 1960s by Gael Turnbull, Duncan Glen, David Black and others, and by illuminating references to his relationships with American and European writers like Lorine Niedecker, Ernst Jandl and Louis Zukovsky. Other contributors focus on contemporary issues in Finlay's work, particularly its philosophical basis. The volume includes new poetry by Finlay, and a sequence of personal responses to the garden at Stonypath, Little Sparta. This issue stresses the all-round importance of Finlay as poet, artist, multimedia architect and cultural pioneer, recognizing his place in Scottish art and letters.
