Ever have one of those days where it is raining outside and while you have 200 channels on the cable, nothing's on? This collection is one of the cures. I remember these movies on Saturday afternoon television and they are still as fun as they were back then. These are the iconic versions of Sherlock Holmes as we remember along with his companion, Dr Watson. When you think of Sherlock Holmes, you imagine Basil Rathbone. Basil Rathbone is an interesting character. Like most, I best remember Basil Rathbone as the evil villian in a million swashbucklers always losing after a long swordfight with Tyrone Power or Errol Flynn, which I still find amazing considering that Basil Rathbone lost part of a leg in the First World War! Still, this swashbuckling background served him well in this series. These were not great movies. They were good but never intended to be great. They were also a bit formulaic. Holmes is drawn into a baffling case. Holmes and Watson investigate. Holmes cracks the case but is placed in danger by the villian and the gang of theives but is rescued by the bumbling Watson leading to the finale where England and the Empire is saved by Holmes and Watson. With the mix of action, suspense and mystery, only Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone could pull this off. These are good movies, owing to the fact that they are heavily drawn from the original stories by Conan Doyle. The scenarios are set so they are easily followed and the films are not overly long... in fact, they might seem a little short to a modern audience since most are only about 90 minutes. Still, it is a 90 minutes well spent with fine actors playing old friends that are as good as you remember them. All you really need is a bag of popcorn!Read full review
If you love these old SHERLOCK HOLMES movies with Basil Rathbone and Nigle Bruce as much as I do...well then this set is for you. Beautifuly remastered picture and sound and lovingly restored by UCLA Film Archive. They even have the war bond advertisement at the end of each film. Trust me You won't be disappointed. Get them while you can, because I'm sure these will go out of print soon and they will cost much more to get. This 4 disc set comes with a nice booklet detailing all 4 movies. An absolute must have for lovers of classic cinema.
These old black & white films are redone so that they are much better quality than most offered for sale. I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and it is great to be able to watch them as they were originally produced and not as deteriorated.

The restoration by the UCLA Film and Television Archive to digitally restore these films to their original condition is spectacular. Any fan of this series, will truly appreciate the films as they are now. Many cable showings of these films were in the previous form; with Universal Studio logos & accompanying music buthered out. The audio commentaries give the viewer production history of the films, and the series as a whole. A must for fans of the Holmes & Watson portrayed by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
I remember these movies from 1950s-1960s as being very good even if they were not historically set as in the Brett versions. Rathbone provides a character that seems more believable.
