Howard K. Smith, one of America's foremost television journalists, spent six years in Germany observing the rise of Hitler before he took 'the last train from Berlin' to freedom in Switzerland. He has written a unique account of Hitler's rise to power; the men around him (particularly Goebbel's); the suffering of the German people 'who did not want this war' and the life of a journalist under increasingly difficult conditions in a Germany at war. First published in 1942 as a warning to the free world of Hitler's intentions, the book relates how Goebbels manipulated the Press (pretending that Russia was defeated in a few days; that England was seeking peace terms in July, 1940) and the psychological manipulation of the German people of all ages. Now with a new introduction and a selection of his previously unpublished photographs.
