While the fascination is with Meryl Streep's highly entertaining performance, as she does all of her own rock song singing and rhythm guitar playing, in a band with Rick Springfield playing the lead guitar, this film is about family, life and the messier parts of both. If you want to watch yet another accomplishment of Meryl Streep's, playing electric and acoustic rhythm rock guitar, this film will likely be awe inspiring. Filmed while Ms. Streep was 65yo (!) the inspirational component is generated by her willingness to take on and certainly manage yet another performance artistic challenge, ever learning; thus, as lively as can be. Perhaps that is also the primary message within the film about the title character Streep incarnates: Ricki. Watch ans see how her flexibility creates the necessary willingness Ricki must use to grow into her family that's grown up without her being physically present. I wouldn't write that this film is about yet another "dysfunctional" family because what happens works. The idea that families with complications and struggles are "dysfunctional" has become antiquated since every family has their own issues with which to contend. It's when a family doesn't "work together" on whatever needs more attention that it goes into a state of dysfunction, instead. Ricki and the Flash is the name of a rock band. This film goes way beyond featuring the band. By the way, Streep's on screen daughter is played by one of her real life daughter's, Mamie Gummer (actress in American Horror Story). I've given it 5 stars for the excellent presentation of the variety of messages the film transmits through the well written script, well developed and played characters, live music and great direction & production. Streep is flawless-as usual. This film is a well constructed story of a family finding its way back to each other. Healing, poignant, funny, sad-a life portrait. One reviewer said she was Streep's age & couldn't see herself doing. what Streep does at "that age". News flash- I'll be 65 soon & I have no problem rocking out onstage as I've done. my whole life! Hence the title of my review. I was initially attracted to this film for it's story of an older rock singer. The music & singing is great, but the story is what really holds your attention. Superb acting all around. Kudos to everyone involved in the making of this film. Perhaps that reviewer has never seen Cher in concert. She's 73 & can still rock! I wish that MS. Streep had pursued a musical career along with her acting career. She excells at everything she does. I highly recommend seeing MS Streep in Postcards From The Edge. Her singing in it was wondrous. The song she did over the end credits just showed how much she loves singing. The joy just flowed out of her. A great tribute to the now late great Carrie Fisher. I cannot recommend Ricki & the Flash highly enough! Brava MsStreep!Read full review

I have the movie now for one week and must have watched it 20 some times already. I can only say that it is a fantastic movie with fantastic songs. I can't get enough of the movie. I am her age and can't think of doing something like what she is doing. How in the world is she getting this energy from? I also love all the songs and Rick Springfield. He is a fantastic guitar player. I already loved Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia's singing, but her singing in this movie trumps it all. Well watch for yourselves.
