Gilbert and Sullivans classic comic operetta bursts to life in this energetic 1983 film production,celebrating the 100th anniversary Broadway stage production in New York.Young pirate Frederic (Rex Smith) is ready for change. Having served under the charismatic Pirate King (Academy Award winner Kevin Kline, A Fish Called Wanda) for years he is keen to move on in the world and make his own mark. Determined to celebrate his 21st birthday and break free from his apprenticeship, he intends on courting the beautiful Mabel (Linda Ronstadt) and living life to the fullest. However life as a pirate on the open seas is a complicated one and because he was born on a leap year, Frederic isn't technically 21 - meaning the Pirate King is destined to remain his master for the next 63 years. To compound his awkward situation Frederic is destined to face the Pirate Kings new arch rival, who also happens to be Mabels father. Also featuring Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote) and George Rose (Hawaii), The Pirates of Penzance is a dazzling comedy of riches, romance and swashbuckling song and dance.

I had seen a short viewing of this old musical which had been somewhat updated about 40 years ago in New York . The producers had put together an excellent group of artists and the result was 5 Star entertainment.

Absolutely brilliant concept to bring a famous operetta to the masses who would never dreaming of watching something done by opera singers Because you can actually understand the words they are singing, you actually get the humour of Gilbert and Sullivan that you could not hear before. Linda Rondstat is divine, who knew she could sing like that. Brilliant acting by Rex Smith, Kevin Kline and Angela Landsbury. The policeman dance segments are excellent, the major general song brilliant, I could go on and on. So glad to finally get it on DVD instead of my old video copy. I have watched it many times over the years and never tire of it. Beautiful, fun, feel good movie. The Pirates of Penzance
The Gilbert and Sullivan music is taken to a higher plane with the characters in this production. The setting of the introduction and finale cleverly encloses the actual musical. Scenery is beautiful, and choreography, especially with the policemen, is brilliant. In all a very joyfully entertaining production.
