Crumb's organizational skills tame the unwieldy literature of this movement into a one-volume, ready-reference resource for those who continue the research task within this field. Without question, The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders is a monumental labor of love, a high-water mark for theological bibliography., The scope of this bibliography is comprehensive, and the outline is easy to follow. Its presentation of the sources is simple and straightforward, and the expanded author and subject indices in this edition provide important tools for researchers. Synopsis
The Oxford Movement began in the Church of England in 1833 and extended to the rest of the Anglican Communion, eventually influencing other denominations. It was an attempt to remind the church of its divine authority, independent of the state, and return it to its Catholic heritage deriving from the ancient and medieval periods, as well as the Caroline Divines of 17th-century England. The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders is a comprehensive bibliography of books, pamphlets, chapters, periodical articles, manuscripts, microforms, and audio recordings dealing with the movement and its influence on art, literature, music, and theology; authors include scholars in these fields, as well as the fields of history, political science, and natural sciences. The first edition and its supplement contained comprehensive coverage through 1983 and 1990, respectively. This second edition, with more than 8,000 citations covering multiple languages, extends through 2001 and includes many earlier items not previously listed, corrections and additions, and a list of electronic sources.
