  • A Call to Practical Living

Old classic on extreme country living. Mountain people have been parodied and mocked by highbrows for years; this book reveals useful information that can apply to living through times good and bad, written plainly and well. This first volume has a great deal of practical content; those from the rural south will recognize the ways of their elders in the many stories told here.

  • Foxfire Series is a great collection of books about the old ways.

I was very happy to receive the foxfire books and am enjoying reading them and learning some of the old ways. The only problem I have come across is that the printing in some parts of the books appears to have been done with not enough ink on the drums or blankets so there are faded sections or parts recipes missing, which is a bit of a disappointed since these books were not inexpensive.

  • Best Brunswick

I discovered the Foxfire books in the early 1980’s and the recipe for Brunswick Stew is the best I have found. My boyfriend at the time and myself would take the Airstream and our horses to camp for a week at out local Wagon Train event. There were horse shows as well as other events that week ending with a 25 mile ride to a neighboring town and back to our facility the following day. The sheriff’s deputies always oversaw law and order that week. We extended an open door for them to stop by and share food with us. They loved my Brunswick stew and always asked what night I was serving it 😊

  • Everything old is new again.

The Foxfire Book was written more than 50 years ago, and fascinated me then. I have rediscovered an old friend, whose descriptions of basic skills is even more timely than they were in my "hippie" days.

  • Foxfire books

The Foxfire book collection are really good. I just wish the books were printed in a little bit larger type set. The print is so small I am having trouble reading them. The pages are sort of off white so the black print does not show as well. That may be part of the issue. And that is with glasses.

These are very good information books on just about any subjects. I recommend eventually owning the entire set books 1--12.

  • Foxfire books

Books were better than expected, some hardly had been opened. One used as a library book had some ink underlining of sentences but minimal overall. I am very satisfied. Thanks.

  • good information book

this was a book my wife wanted. It was a good price for a used book. However, when we opened it up the back was broken. We will still use it we just need to be careful with it.

  • Everyone should read this!

The book has valuable information that would have been lost to time, had this wise teacher not had the idea for his students to ask their elders (family and neighbors) to tell about their skills and their life stories, and compile in this book. I find it all very interesting to know how so many things were done before technology, using naturally occurring things of the region. Also, how happy the people were living a simplistic life. Even though their daily work was physically hard, it was healthful and they enjoyed it! I will be referencing this book for home remedies, gardening tips, weather predictions, crafting and building, cooking, sewing and much, much more! In addition, what a great example this project was, as to the affect it had on the students who gathered the stories and compiled the book. More parents and teachers should be utilizing a hands on approach when teaching children. They are capable of so much more than we give them credit for. Super enjoyable book!
