Interesting epochal film accurately depicted. An historian’s delight.

Black and white film lends an air of authenticity to the film. Probably Gert Frobe’s best career role. Paris being just about the cultural centre of the Western world, the events that led to it being preserved for posterity is a dramatic story in its own right.

Three long hours, but worth it. Consider reading the book it is based on.

It is a war movie, thus character development is secondary. I would have liked to learn a little more about the German commander for the Paris region, played by Gert Froebe of "Goldfinger" fame. I was disappointed that so many well-known actors had mere cameo parts. And I really missed the inclusion of a booklet giving a little more historical background information and listing the actors and their characters. I recommend the movie to WW II history buffs. It is in black and white and the sound is not the best - as may be expected from a 56-year old production.

    • A Great Portrayal of the Defense of Paris in 1944

The story is a bit slow to get going and it's initially hard to determine who is who. But by 20 minutes or so in, it all seems to come together. The heroism and determination shown by the French people was impressive. I was truly amazed at how many scenes were shot in the actual streets of Paris very near many if its famed landmarks (Notre Dame, along Champs Elyse's, and along the Seine River). Plus the fact that the film was presented in black and white allowed the film makers to include actual footage from the time (such as some of the street battles as well as German troops marching along Paris' better known streets). While the film does carry the traditional story line of Good-Guys-Beat-Bad-Guys, it is also a brilliant homage to the French defenders in 1944 who ensured that Paris would ...

    • Clever

I am very interested in World War II and have done extensive reading on the subject. Someone asked me if I had seen this particular movie, which I hadn’t. I did not realize it would be rather difficult to obtain, so when I found this copy, sans case, I bought it. I am very pleased it’s my purchase and enjoyed watching this lengthy, informative movie.
