While I liked the basic story and the characters, I felt too much time was spent with diplomatic/political narrative; too many words that didn't really say anything or give anything pertinent to the story. Ms. Laurens could have edited about 50 pages off by cutting out these lumbering, non-essential details. I was surprised when the villain was identified. Quite different from what the reader was led to believe. But I thought the way Ferdinand was dealt with at the end was terribly weak, rather like a loose end the author almost forgot to wrap up. The story had lots of well-written sizzle between the Hero and Heroine. But I didn't have a sense of really knowing the main character and their backgrounds. Ms. Laurens touched briefly on Michael's younger years, but said nothing about Caro's early years so we really don't know WHY or HOW she learned her hostessing skills as was mentioned many times in the story. Did she just drop onto earth at age 17 with all these innate abilities just waiting for some Svengali to come along to help her develop them? In spite of all this, Michael and Caro do have their HEA. Ms. Laurens is one of my favorite authors, but I don't think this was one of her better works. Enjoying her work as I do, I’ll keep an open mind and continue to read the remaining ‘Brothers of Cynster Wives’ stories that she has to tell.Read full review
I really enjoyed this book. It had a little of everything, mystery, drama, & lots of romance. Stephanie Laurens is a great romance novelist. I would also highly recommend another one of her books, The Perfect Lover.
