I always wonder why, as our technology grows and things should be simpler, that some moron designer, Mechanical or Software based ideas/designs tend to make things more complicated to use instead of easier! Yes, some things do get easier, but either I'm an idiot or I just buy at the wrong time or things, or I just notice, and or am bothered by stupidity of some designs! Well, the unit is very nice/good for what it is. I wanted it for the size of the screen (7''), and it was supposedly designed for trucks, which I drive! I had read a review on it somewhere else saying that it didn't show street names on the screen, which kept me from buying it back then, (6-8 mos.). But after talking to Garmin about it, saying that it did, I opted to buy it, which in a way I'm glad I waited, because I found the reconditioned units at a much reduced price, which is always a good thing! Now to the problem I have with the unit and the designers! I've been using a Cobra 3000 for the last 3 plus years and even though it has it's own little quirks, is a much simpler operation. One button will take you through 3 different Nav screens, another takes care of multiple other items, whereas with the 7200, you have to change screens three or more times to access one change in the navigation, or screen brightness, or other items you might need to do while using it. Yes, I know you're not supposed to make changes or adjustments while you're driving, but you know how much we all pay close attention to those warnings, like don't use Cell phones while driving, which I do pay attention to, (it is distracting for me) but when I need the GPS setting to be adjusted it needs to be as simple as it can be, which the Garmin 7200 designer didn't do. But the Screen Size, Ease of Address Programing, (could use search by ZIP Code as well though) and the touch screen makes it work very well. Though the truck routing doesn't seem to be any better, if even different then the regular Garmin units truck route mapping software, seems they only keep you from the Parkways, not the low bridges so far as I can tell, I guess it's pretty good? Though I didn't think I would like the 3D map view, I've come to use it most often, and with the large screen and the 3D I was surprised that you can see your route very many miles in the distance, and on the full screen mode many more miles surrounding your location! Overall, it's a nice unit, and works well, even though you can only mount it on the dash in the upright position, a versatile multi position windshield mount would be nice, or being able to mount it in an inverted position would be nice. I would never had bought it at the MSRP 1200 plus $ but at the reduced EBay prices, and better yet the reconditioned prices, I took a chance and am not sorry for it. Just a little annoyed at the designer! But then I seem to always find something to complain about, that's why I'm planning on getting a lobotomy so I can live the rest of my life with a smile on my face and not care about anything anymore! So if you see that big 18 wheeler coming down the road and the driver is smiling way to much after you cut him off, well, ................? Remember if you see blinking, you should be thinking, let that truck change lanes in front of you, it could be an emergency on the shoulder up ahead he's moving over for, maybe even you someday! It's not a competition, don't drive like it is! LaterRead full review
I put this gps in my truck. It's size allowed me to mount it down in the lower dash/cup holder area. I had already had one stolen because it was in the windshield and very visible in my mega cab. I'd recommend mounting this one lower due to its large and very bright display screen. Mounting this one on the dash would be a huge driving hazard. The features are incredible. Weather, traffic, music, and navigation all work for me very well. I travel a lot to other parts of the country and need to know what the traffic is in an area up ahead. The XM antenna is a bit pricey but functions very well. The set up is like the smaller garmins in that it uses a plug in power cord and detachable mount. It doesnt have a battery so has to be plugged in to work and it's large size does not make it suitable for a smaller car. I had to hard mount the base down low on a flat area in my truck and would like just a tiny bit more tilt ability. All in all I love this product and the features it comes with. I especially like its size and the fact that I only have to glance down at the screen due to its easy readability. If you have an RV or large truck I'd recommend this product easily.Read full review
I bought this unit for my son. I own two more identical ones for a few years. It is geared for larger vehicles, but with an aftemarket suction cup windshield mount can be used in almost any car without blocking the view. More details on map than the smaller screens, also shows speed, expected trip arrival time and other details. Unfortunately discontinued, still enough available as "new". It has multimedia connections (I hooked up a rear-view camera to it). Satellite radio (subscription and antenna needed), but you may need an adapter to the stereo if the aerial is far from the unit (FM signal weak). Map updates probably the same as others. I bought a map of Taiwan on an SD card, navigable straight from the card for my son. The US maps are great. Lots of other features. Current prices are great.Read full review
My husband has wanted one of these since they first came out. I was against it because of the large size as we do not have a motor home. We ended up purchasing a smaller Garmin model. This summer the touch screen started acting up, and of course my husband got on eBay and found the Garmin 7200 for an excellent price. I was still skeptical of the size, but I did appreciate the big screen visibility and ease of use (both the touch screen and remote.) As to the size restriction...I have found it to be very useable in both our Ford F350 Super Duty truck and our GMC Acadia. My husband enjoys the fact that he can glance over and see the screen without taking a lot of attention off the road. The only negative thing that I can think of is that the picture on the screen is not quite a clear as on the smaller screen GPS, but this has not really hurt the viewing. Over all, we love it.Read full review
This item only supports a 2gb SD card, ALL new maps are nearly 4gb rendering these, or LMT, models useless. Be aware that a number of these older Garmin GPS units will NOT support the new map files. For those of you who are tech savvy it can be done. I was able to install 2017.20 USA/Canada maps onto one of these units. The trick is you need to download a copy of 2017.20 Lower 48 state maps, (torrent) and 2017.20 Canada/Alaska maps (torrent). The Canada/Alaska maps are copied direct into the Garmin folder in the unit via mass storage access. First delete the "gmapprom" copy in the folder before coping. The USA Lower 48 states are put onto a 4gb SD card but you need to use "DiskPart" to partition the SD card to a 2gb card which is slightly larger than a standard 2gb SD card. (Look up "Partition 4gb to 2gb to get instructions) It has just enough space the the USA Lower 48 states will fit on it after you complete the partition resizing. This is obviously a little more than most people can grasp but if you do get it, it works great, , Good Luck, ,Read full review
