    • The Spider's House by Paul Bowles. Magnificent novel.

Written against the backdrop of the Moroccan independence upheaval against the French in the early 1950s, specifically in the ancient city of Fez. This book explores the viewpoint of Moslems and Christians and gives the authors opinion of the chasm seperating them. Articulate and thoughtful and full of insight, it is spot-on relevant to today, with 9/11still a close memory and Afghanistan imploding right now. It is beautifully written and is the longest of his four novels and maybe the most thought out and factual. Paul Bowles is often overlooked but has written one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century with this book.
