      A well researched and enjoyable book with over 1000 color plates.

      I found Bob Stevens book very well researched and thought out, easy to read, personal and thuroroughly enjoyable. Mr Stevens is a true snuff bottle addict and the book overflows with his enthusiam and keen research and dedication. In his persuit he has left few stones unturned. The book starts with an introduction and history of snuff which is well researched and comprehensive. The majority of the excellent color images are at actual size and include 136 snuff plates, 19 spoons and 876 snuff bottles. There is an excellent section on the meaning of the carved symbols and motifs found on snuff bottles. This encompasses Chinese cosmology, folklore and use of phonetically similar words to convey hidden meanings. An example is the symbol of a bat which in Chinese sounds similar to good ...
