About this product

Product Information

"I don't have two lives," Annie Leibovitz writes in the Introduction to this collection of her work from 1990--2005. "This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it." Portraits of well-known figures-Johnny Cash, Nicole Kidman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Keith Richards, Michael Jordan, Joan Didion, R2-D2, Patti Smith, Nelson Mandela, Jack Nicholson, William Burroughs, George W. Bush with members of his Cabinet-appear alongside pictures of Leibovitz's family and friends, reportage from the siege of Sarajevo in the early Nineties, and landscapes made even more indelible through Leibovitz's discerning eye. The images form a narrative rich in contrasts and continuities: The photographer has a long relationship that ends with illness and death. She chronicles the celebrations and heartbreaks of her large and robust family. She has children of her own. All the while she is working, and the public work resonates with the themes of her life.

  • The most PERSONAL photo book Liebovitz has done!

I am a huge fan of Leibovitz's photography and I highly recommend this book for several reaosns: 1. It is not just filled with celebrity photos. In fact, I'd say the celebrity shots are the exception here. Instead, many of the photos chronicle her own life, her decision to give birth relatively late (52) and the subsequent birth of her twins. 2. The foreword is a wonderful and revealing essay about her decision to create this book, which came about as she set out to create a photogaphic memorial to her partner, after her death. That was the impetus for this work and it was a catharsis, althought deeply painful. Reading her words, I felt moved, saddened and inspired, understanding some of the pain she must have gone through as she looked at old photos of her family, etc. 3. The range of ...

  • Unique for Annie:

This book has been criticized because some (not many) of the photographs "split" over two pages and thus are hard to view. This criticism is warranted; those photographs would better have been on one page even if it meant their being smaller. Unfortunately, the book also has been criticized because it is so personal. The rich and famous are there, but not always predominant. Actually I like this. Often, especially in her earlier photos which now are history, I don't even know who those people are--or were. But amazing artistry in photographs of family and friends causes one to appreciate the aesthetic value and not just the subject. I believe this is her best book, and one to be the standard for imitation by others. It truly shows that she is more than just a glamor people chaser; she also ...

  • Great book!

Lots of black and whites, showing parents and siblings. A very personal side mixed in with the professional shots. A must-have addition to her collective works.
