  • Breakaway from standard anime schoolgirl fare

I've been looking for quality hard sci-fi since "Planetes". (It seems to be completely absent in American productions.) "Rocket Girls" isn't on that level, but once you get past the schoolgirl show conventions (Japanese school girls are capable of outperforming *anyone* -- even NASA-trained astronauts! -- and will have adventures with a few improbable happenstances along the way), this short series is simply a lot of fun. Watching the main character grow up from an impulsive spaz to a passionate, but thoughtful professional kept me hooked. There's more than a passing nod to scientific accuracy in this show; it's nice to have some light entertainment where my brain can participate, too. (The science isn't *flawless*, but they don't shy away from considering some of the ways space ...

  • The Smallest Astronauts

Suitable for all audiences is “Rocket Girls”, a living embodiment of one of Johnny Carson’s basics: “If you buy the premise, you buy the bit.” In this universe, in which Japan has its own space program (sort of, it’s a private company), the Solomon Space Association, they’ve struck a serious problem, potentially fatal to the whole business. The problem is that their latest rocket, the LS-7, large enough to carry an astronaut into orbit, tends to explode upon launching (like, every single time they’ve tried it); their backers are threatening to pull their funding if they don’t actually launch an astronaut… soon; and their very reliable older rocket, the LS-5, cannot lift a full grown man, unless they starve him down to the point where he flat out quits the program. That’s where the premise ...

  • I'd like this to get more exposure - it deserves it!

I had only seen this as a picture in a Megami magazine but as a space buff all my life, I bought it and feel it was one of the most enjoyable anime titles I've seen in awhile, ranking it with AMG and "Kaliedo Star". It's literally "Nadia, Secret of Blue Water" meets "The Right Stuff"! It's about a private budding Japanese Space Agency based in the Solomon islands who winds up using teenage girls as astronauts to save weight. Their plan is to be able to repair satellites and ends with them coming to aid NASA.

  • Good
