About this product

Product Information

The housing conditions of Turks in Western Europe and their market options are critical but under discussed issues. Many Turks still occupy the less favourable sectors of the labour market, and low income levels restrict housing choices. Discrimination imposes further limitations upon them. In this book, leading scholars in the field describe the housing conditions of Turks in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The authors of the various chapters go beyond mere description to explain the housing market positions of Turks in each of these countries. A thorough investigation is thus made of factors which may affect housing conditions, including: labour market developments and the employment situation of Turks; discrimination; state welfare provisions; and the preferences and priorities of individuals themselves. A further comparative element is introduced by examining different locations within each country. A rather bleak picture emerges of Turks still occupying a disadvantaged position in the housing markets of the countries under review. Some promising developments are also evident, however, in that Turks on average live in better situations now than they did ten years ago. This volume should appeal to academics, students and policy-makers.
