About this product

Product Information

ZULU DAWN depicts the bloody Battle of Isandhlwana, in which 30,000 Zulu warriors wiped out nearly 1,500 British troops stationed in Natal. The film focuses most sharply on the preparations for battle and the political situation in the region at that time. Taking Zulu chief Cetshwayo's defiant stance on tribal customs as a declaration of war, General Lord Chelmsford sends in hundreds of British troops in order to squash the spear-carrying Africans with superior fire power. The sheer number of Zulus, however, overwhelms the British infantry.

Historic film that is accurate and well worth the watch.

Excellent film depicting the action at Rourke's Drift in South Africa during the Zulu War where a company of the 24th Regiment of Foot managed to hold off an army of thousands of Zulu warriors. Historically accurate and one of Michael Caine's first starring roles.

  • Zulu Dawn - well worth the price

A good film of a disastrous British defeat at the start of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The battle at Isandlhwana was the first action of the war, followed the same day by the defense of Rorke's Drift as depicted in the 1964 film 'Zulu'. Widescreen, a good print transfer, good South African scenery, and of course a cast of thousands in period uniforms on both sides. Good action sequences and several character actors give a personal side to the large-scale history presented. Burt Lancaster and Denholm Elliot play the two commanders in charge of the British camp while Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole) scouts ahead. Their threefold incompetence leads to the disaster later that day, one for failure to properly defend his camp, the other for failure to use his cavalry as scouts, and lastly ...

  • exciting historical story

It was full of action, realistically unfolded as a historical fact. The costumes were impressive and the countryside settings were a geographical education. The actors made the story unfold the way you would have expected them to perform in the real situation. . Very exciting historical event .

  • Great double feature!

As I understand it, Zulu was produced first, even though Zulu Dawn was meant to be seen before Zulu. Once the success of Zulu, the producers were able to secure the financing to produce Zulu Dawn using an all star cast. Don't get caught up only in the remastering quality. We're reviewing movies here and this is one of the greats. I was so absorbed in the movie, I never noticed the quality until I just read some of the reviews. Does this mean I can't enjoy Laurel and Hardy, or other great old movies, due to the remastering quality? I know quality is part of enjoying a movie, but it isn't everything. There is the overall picture. Some Saturday/Sunday, when you have a lot of free time, make a big bowl of popcorn, your drink of choice, and enjoy a Zulu Dawn/Zulu double feature. Be ...

  • Great title to pique interest in the subject.

Always sad to see the arrogance of leaders who make stupid decisions and their men having to pay the ultimate price.
