About this product

Product Information

The chameleon-like Peter Sellers (DR. STRANGELOVE, THE PINK PANTHER) plays Harold Fine, a mild-mannered Jewish lawyer rapidly approaching middle-age. He has an overbearing mother, a bland fiancé, and a life that seems doomed to be forever "square." His world flips upside down when he runs into Nancy (Leigh Taylor-Young), a groovy flower-power girl who cooks a mean batch of "hash brownies." Faster than you can say "Helter-Skelter," Harold grows out his hair, trades in his briefcase for bellbottoms, and dives into the free-lovin' scene of the swinging sixties. Eventually, however, Harold has to face that fact that he's not completely cut out for the hippie lifestyle. Filled with humor and sly insight, I LOVE YOU ALICE B. TOKLAS neither condemns nor glorifies the counterculture; rather, the film shows both the seductive and problematic facets of the psychedelic age. With brilliant performances from Sellers and the lovely Taylor-Young, and a rollicking rock soundtrack, I LOVE YOU ALICE B. TOKLAS remains an irreverent and witty testament to a time of hope and change.

Ed at Hot Platters is a very good seller and has amazing customer service. Shipping was very quick and item was as described. However there was a slight packing error that resulted in minor damage occuring to the product during shipping . I contacted them immediately after discovering the issue, several solutions were proposed and we came to an arrangement suitable for us both. Five stars. I trust this vendor and will definitely buy from them again.

  • Peace, Love and good Brownies

If you liked Cheech and Chong, you'll love this movie! By 1968, the hippie counterculture had penetrated Hollywood to the extent of this hilarious film starring Peter Sellers as a Jewish lawyer with hovering mother and dominating fiancée. Then he meets this knock-out-beautiful hippie chick, who bakes some brownies laced with marijuana, which are then consumed by the lawyer and his parents. The laughter is contagious! You'll get contact high just watching! Peter Sellers is as deft and funny in this role as he was in "The Pink Panther," and more enjoyable than his "Dr. Strangelove" character. Leigh Taylor-Young plays the beautiful hippie. You can't blame Harold Fine, the lawyer played by Sellers. I'd follow her anywhere. The screenplay was written by Paul Mazursky and Larry Tucker, ...

  • Groovy and out of sight!

Great movie that captures the time period of the hippie culture in So Cal. Director Mazursky is well known for this ability while Peter Sellers is a genius in this pre-Pink Panther production. Supporting cast does a fantastic job to complete the overall portrayal of life in the late 1960's as it actually was. The scene of the initial brownies encounter is priceless and one of the highlights of this delightful movie. Highly recommended for just plain fun. A great trip, pun intended, down Memory Lane for those of us who lived it.

  • Brownies make the man

The title, I thought, was a little misleading. I kept waiting for Alice to show up in the plot, but she never does. The characters in portraying 60s hippies were a bit exaggerated, but perhaps they seemed so because I was actually one of them in the 60s. But, being an ex-hippie who still has a soft spot for that time, I very much enjoyed it.

  • Why is this DVD so hard to find?

This film is like a cross between "What's New Pussycat?", "After the Fox" and (strangely) "Crossing Delancey". Not quite up there with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine in "The Apartment", but getting close. Alright, maybe not that close, but on the same planet at least. The version I bought (region 1 DVD) has a slightly abrupt ending, but is otherwise pretty well adapted to the DVD format. Nothing much in the way of extra features, but all the cast give performances close to their best (at least of those that I've seen). For anyone interested in the flower power scene in San Francisco, and the reasons why it was supplanted by NYC punk, this film can give you a few clues. Unfortunately it doesn't explain how both punk and hippy cultures were replaced by mind-numbingly dull, unimaginative, ...

The dvd plays great...the cover art is ruined (as seen in photo, no surprises), but after cutting off the outer plastic and gluing the paper cover down, it appears fine in one's library of dvds. FAST shipping! AAAAAAAA++++++
