The Light of Other Days confronts us with a thought-experiment: If you could find out the truth, would you do it, even if it meant abandoning your beliefs and radically changing your lifestyle? I’ve been a big fan of science fiction since I was a young boy, and particularly of British science fiction; the tradition of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Arthur Conan Doyle and H G Wells, Arthur C Clarke and Brian Aldiss, Quatermass and Doctor Who, Tanith Lee and, supremely in my own generation, Stephen Baxter. The Light of Other Days is a brilliant and challenging novel with the best possible pedigree, written by Stephen Baxter from a synopsis by Arthur C Clarke. It explores the implications of developing wormhole technology. On the offchance that any of us are a little rusty on general ... It explores the implications of developing wormhole technology. On the offchance that any of us are a little rusty on general relativity and the hypothetical topology of space time, all we need to know is that, in theory, a wormhole is a tunnel with one end here and the other at any other time and place you choose, through which it would be possible to see and hear what is or was going on. The novel describes the development of this technology from the sending of digital information to the transmission of images, at first from the present only and then from any time or place in the past as well. As the story unfolds, the writers also explore the implications of our growing omniscience: They imagine a world in which secrecy and privacy become absolutely impossible. They then extend the idea to a point where ordinary people can find out the truth about every person and event in history. Finally, they attempt to discover the origin of all life on Earth. As a consequence of all this, corruption and crime are drastically reduced, and people learn that historical events were often very different from the way they are remembered because of the biases of the people who recorded them; as the comment often mistakenly attributed to Churchill says, “History is written by the victors.”
