IS THIS NIKON'S ''SLEEPING BEAUTY '' ????
The Nikon 28-105 F3.5-4.5 AF-D would have to be one of Nikon's most underrated lens. Is one of the sharpest lens i have bought on e-bay [and the cheapest ]. Front lens rotates when zooming, but that does not worry me, great macro results. Is lightweight and a good walk-around lens. Currently using this lens on a Nikon D800 and could'nt be happier with the results. lens rating = 5/5

Deceptively good all purpose lens, great value.
This is one of Nikon's great surprises, it is deceptively good. It won't go into the hall of fame for construction, but it is nice handling all the same. It's real strength though is that it is remarkably sharp and with very low distortion throughout its range. It directly compared in sharpness to my 35-70 f2.8D in the shared focal lengths, and then later I found it also matched my 24-70 f2.8 AF-S around f8. On a DX camera it covers from just wide of normal and with a decent long reach. On a full frame, it is a very convenient coverage from wide to moderate tele. In either case, it is a reliable, light and high performing lens for general purpose use such as a travel lens. Not easy to manually focus, (short arc of movement), but resepectably quick and accurate in auto focus. Also, the lens ... This is one of Nikon's great surprises, it is deceptively good. It is an excellent lens with a very flexible focal range, fantastic macro function which definitely comes in handy and is a VERY sharp lens. The auto focus speed is pretty average but nothing to complain about still preforms outstandingly but can sometimes take a while to focus as it will hunt for the subject if not defined. My only negative would have to be the fact that when on the "macro" function you can not zoom out past 50mm and unless the focus distance is out of the macro range you can not switch it back to "normal". Sharp and great macro.
At a used price of ~$200, this lens is a steal. Great for use as a walkaround, it covers a handy focal length range and, despite being made partly from metal, it remains fairly light. Not to mention the amazing macro capabilities, which allow you to focus as close as 10cm from the end of the lens!
