Synopsis
The acclaimed author of Motoring with Mohammed brings us a compelling adventure into the remarkable world of the orchid and the impossibly bizarre array of international characters who dedicte their lives to it. The orchid is used for everything from medicine for elephants to an aphrodisiac ice cream. A Malaysian species can grow to weigh half a ton while a South American species fires miniature pollen darts at nectar-sucking bees. But the orchid is also the center of an illicit international business: one grower in Santa Barbara tends his plants while toting an Uzi, and a former collector has been in hiding for seven years after serving a jail sentence for smuggling thirty dollars worth of orchids into Britain. Deftly written and captivatingly researched, Orchid Fever is an endlessly enchanting and entertaining tour of an exotic world. "A wonderful book, I've been up all night reading it, laughing and crying out in horror and clucking at the vivid images of bureaucracy with the bit in its teeth." --Annie Proulx "An extraordinary, well-told tale of botany, obsession and plant politics. Hansen's vivid descriptions of the complex techniques some orchids use to pollinate themselves will raise your eyebrows at nature's sexual ingenuity." -- USA Today

I am INCREDIBLY happy with this purchase! These were the cookbooks my mom and I used growing up. When she passed away my dad thoughtlessly donated them thinking no one would use them. After YEARS of searching, without knowing the title/authors, I asked chatGPT for some help. It quickly helped me figure that all out. Within seconds I ordered these and they showed up quickly and great packaging! Exactly as described and worth every cent! Thank you thank you thanks! A+++

  • Deserves 10 stars - intelligent, mesmerizing book about the orchid world.

Fun, interesting, exciting, surprising entry into the orchid world. Eric Hansen travels the globe investigating many different subjects. In the course of those travels he meets the most interesting characters and accepts them warts and all. Well, he doesn't actually accept all of them -- the corrupt governments and museum curators can't be loved by anybody, especially the orchid people. I don't think being the victim of a falsely-contrived, hours-long raid on your orchid green house by police in full combat gear with submachine guns and attack guard dogs would endear any normal person to that group. That sad bit of information, however, is overshadowed by the character, intelligence, grit, humor and drive of those who love orchids more than anything. Probably one of the most ...

  • The writing is easy, pleasant and informative and on a subject about which I really know little; cover a bit used and worn but I didn't care.

My review is in the next blank!
