Canon's GPS receiver sits on top of the flash hot shoe for optimal GPS signal reception. It's powered by it's own AA battery so it doesn't drain the camera battery when running in either tagging-mode, where it updates each minute, or logging-mode where it records your location every 15 seconds or so. I put in a premium lithium AA battery and it can be left running for a few days. What I really like about it is that on the SL1 DSLR camera there's no cables - it sends it data directly to the camera through the hot shoe contacts. The GPS acquisition time is pretty much standard it takes up to 5 minutes to cold start during which photos are not geo-tagged. At least on the SL1 camera body there is a built in firmware menu to review the GPS data - the GPS receiver is integrated into the camera control menus. I really like it but the cost seems very high so it's not great value.Read full review
