I wanted more control over the usual stuff and decided to go looking for a low cost used DSLR. My sis & bro-in-law are pros at this stuff, having the whole 9 yards years ago, including their own dark room, so I do know a little about what to look for in a DSLR. After a few months of looking & learning I settled on a 'Bridge" camera, and even tho a lot of reviews were not flattering to the GE X500, this was the only bridge DSLR camera that had most every Manual Setting that a "real" DSLR has, minus Manual Focusing & the ability to change Len's. The other downfall is it does not shoot RAW, only .jpeg, so doing HDR is close difficult (but not impossible). I will let the pictures speak for themselves. https://www.flickr.com/photos/34050447@N08/sets/72157647932009355/ I have to say that this used $53 eBay Camera is a winner so far. Over the last few days I have learned most of the manual settings, plus the one HUGE downfall of this camera...it eats batteries for Breakfast, Lunch, AND Dinner! In 2 days I have gone thru 4 packs of brand new Rayovac & one pack of Duracell Alkaline's. The Manual says 300 shots with Alkaline, try 139-146 tops. As for video, it sucks...not even acceptable for you tube. Way too grainy, too much mechanical noise in the audio,etc,etc....really, it sucks! Bottom line, this GE X500 is one of those hidden gems that delivers far above it's price new OR used IMHO.Grab 'em before folks find out what a gem they are!Read full review
I'm not a camera connoisseur and can't say that this is the best you're going to find. However, I bought one new couple years ago and saw one here at a great price, so bought it for a spare. What I like are the choice of eye-level viewfinder or screen on the back and the long telephoto lens when you need it. Looking on the web for this model and its predecessor, the X5, all the reviewers say about the same things--good value, takes good-enough pictures for most applications, but slow. The slow didn't sound like a problem until I wanted to take a picture of the back of my house from a distance. At the long telephoto length, I couldn't hand-hold the camera steady enough to focus on the house and then keep it there while it took the picture. After I got several pictures of the sky above the house, I gave up. I put a tripod in the back of the car and that will take care of the problem next time I go out. I'd buy another, if I needed it.Read full review

Since this camera was bought used the review would not apply to a new model.. The camera sometimes reverts to original settings. When on is initiated it may go to Year, Day , Time. Even after that has been set several times it is no guarantee that function will remain. It does not always find the subject for auto focus. On the positive side, the camera takes excellent photos and the aps are an interesting range. I was drawn to the camera by its size, ease of operation and quality of results. Other than not useful for quick focus and fast shooting, it is a remarkable camera . Review ****
I used my friend GE POWER PRO series X500 16.0 MP Digital Camera on a criuze and the quality of the pictures were amazing and thus decided to get my own. It;s a great camera to have. I only have two other issues with it .The first being that whenever you extend the lenses it makes a freeky sound which is disturbing and secondly it from time to time says that it cannot write to card even when there is no issue with the card.
The 'new' X500 has all the features that the 'old' X5 had, except the X500 has 16Mpixels and the X5 only had 14Mpixels. This is a replacement for my X5 due to it losing the shutter button and zoom adj knob. Since GE no longer makes the X5, there are no replacements parts to fix. Thus the new camera. Why do I love this camera? At its price range, it is one of the very few digital cameras that has a SRL capability as well as the flat screen ! If you are not a pro, only an average photo taker, and most of the cameras are made in China or Japan (all the same), why spend over $500+ for a camera that this little GE will do and do very well. I have not had the camera long enough to really notice the 2Mpixels difference in photos yet. However, I really love the SLR feature (can look almost into the sun and still see what I am taking a picture of, when all I have on the flat screen is glare), the movie function is great and if you are in 'quite' spaces, the built in mic will pick up everything within range. Lower light levels are no problem for the X500, as I have used the camera inside of various lighted caves without once having to use the 'flash'. If you want a great low cost starter SRL digital camera for every day use, I can not say enough about this low cost camera ! Try it....you will like it as much as I do!Read full review

My purchase was based on product reviews from photo mags and the internet. My needs were low cost efficient digital single lens camera as a 3rd party backup and user friendly for any assistant, good for 8x10 to 11x14 with features comparable to many pro cameras. This definitely suits the "bill". I'm a professional photog since 1966 & have worked with most all makes and model's and owned hassles, minoltas, nikons, cannon, film & digital, including cine, etc. (no Kodaks needs apply).
I am a student still in high school, and I wanted a camera to capture the memories. But I did not want a camera like all the other kids get. I wanted a step up, and this camera is really nice. Takes good pictures, really great flash, amazing zoom, and its just not too heavy to carry around waiting for the perfect picture. The only bad thing I have come to see, is sometimes the pictures are a little blurry. This is my first camera, and I really like it,
An excellent camera, tested in dark scenes outstanding with tripod, telescopic lens, sharp pictures and bright colors, light weight, long battery use, just need to be able of changing lens, some times, in moving scenes, is slow in focusing. It is a Good going on exelent Camera for the price.
good little camera - bought it for macro feature not quite as easy to use as some. The camera does not have sufficient internal memory but the removable memory is easy to use and works well. removable/replaceable lenses would be a plus.
Bought the camera because it was not only a point and shoot model, but also had the same controls as the more expensive DSLR cameras. This could help bridge the gap and making stepping up to the more expensive cameras easier. The camera was light and convenient to handle. The controls were very accessible. The prints I printed were sharp. The colors were rich. I had owned a Fuji Finepix similar to the GE. I didn't find the view finder quite as sharp as the Fuji, but it was but quite adequate. The zoom worked well. All and all, I would rate the camera with high marks for someone wanting to move up from the regular point and shoot camera. The camera also has a view finder to switch on to use when the light.is too bright for using the regular screen. This is a feature that regular point shoots don't have.Read full review
