About this product

Product Information

Horace 'Jim' Greasley was 20 years old in the spring of 1939 when Adolf Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia and latterly Poland. After seven weeks training with the 2nd/5th Battalion Leicester, he found himself facing the might of the German army in a muddy field south of Cherbourg, in Northern France, with just thirty rounds of ammunition in his weapon pouch. Horace's war didn't last long. He was taken prisoner on 25th May 1940 and forced to endure a ten week march across France and Belgium en-route to Holland. Horace survived...barely... Horace found himself incarcerated in a prison camp in Poland. It was there he embarked on an incredible love affair with a German girl interpreting for his captors.

Everything about buying from this seller has been excellent. I'm really pleased with the magazine. Condition is excellent and it was only £3 and free postage too. Unbeatable I'd say. Delivered at lighting speed and very carefully and securely packaged. Lovely hand written note from the seller with the magazine and really nice stamps used. Excellent communication, very friendly and helpful. My second time of buying from this seller and I would definitely buy from them again and highly recommend.

    Great story written badly

A great story written badly.... So much more could have been done with this story... And a different author

  • Disappointing!

I think the fact this book, although perhaps having a decent story to relate, was disappointing, has more to do with Ken Scott than Horace Greasley himself. A better writer could perhaps have conveyed the thoughts and language of the men involved without having to continuously fill every conversation with vile language and describe every sexual encounter in quite such a juvenile manner. It became tedious and really detracted and spoilt what might have been an interesting story.

  • Down-to-earth story of one man's wartime experience as fresh-faced kid who learns about life in the war

It is written in the 3rd person and about Horace's pre-war time at home with his siblings and then during the war and post war - it is more interesting and well written than I first thought and I cannot now put it down! The way it is written is gripping and how I heard about it was through a work connection; it really is a good read !
