Die Handlung setzt mit einem Gespräch zweier junger Männer ein, Lord Henry Wotton, eines gebildeten Dandys, und des erfolgreichen Malers Basil Hallward. Ort des Geschehens ist Basils Atelier, das sich in einen Garten öffnet. Es geht um Kunst und Selbstinszenierung.
