Kazan vive a Shikoku, un regno popolato da fantastiche creature, dove l'apprendimento dell'arte della guerra fa parte del retaggio delle classi nobiliari, le sole a poter pretendere di scalare i vertici militari. Nonostante tutte le ostilit che costretto a fronteggiare Kazan comunque felice di frequentare la Shinkaen-ryu, alla quale ha potuto accedere grazie alla raccomandazione di uno dei maestri ninja pi popolari: Hirata-sensei. Durante una delle sue quotidiane visite a nonno Ukyo, l'uomo che l'ha allevato, Kazan, apparentemente per caso e dopo uno scontro con un misterioso guerriero, s'imbatte in una bestia leggendaria creduta estinta: un leondrago, una creatura dall'immenso potere magico utilizzata in passato per dare la caccia agli spiriti maligni e ai demoni. Sin da subito, il leondrago sembra gradire la presenza del giovane. Dopo tale incontro, la vita di Kazan subisce una svolta radicale. La semplice esistenza della bestia e il suo influsso sul ragazzo suscitano le perplessit dei governanti locali. Cos Kazan deve affrontare un viaggio per ottenere il responso del venerabile Re Dragone sulla natura della bestia e poter quindi capire se sia possibile tenerla con s .
