Reviews
It is no stretch to say that this is the book Ackerman was meant to write. -- Los Angeles Times Diane Ackerman has surpassed even herself in her latest book, which is alternatingly funny, moving, and terrifying. This powerful thriller would be a great novel--except that it is true. -- Jared Diamond

    "History Bufffs? Take heed!!"

This book of "The Zookeepers Wife" is definitely a page turner!! It is the very compelling story of how a married couple turned their zoo into a refuge for Jewish people during the Holocaust when Hitler's ruthless decrees had millions of Jews, gypsies, and Slavs transported to concentration camps to be worked to death, starved, and gas chambers. The few that were able to survive most likely passed through to take refuge in the Zabinskis' zoo. Do take note that this is NOT a novel of war torn Europe during World War II. The author did an excellent job of research to prevent fictitious tales intertwining with the truth. I recommend this book to young and old if they seek to learn more about World War II. Happy reading!!

  • True Story HARDCOVER 2007

This is an amazing story of how two Warsaw zookeepers protected and saved hundreds of Jews inside their bombed out zoo during WWII. The zookeeper's wife is Antonina Zabinski, an animal lover who has spiritual connections with the animals in her care. As the war progresses, Antonina becomes a defender of the Jews and keeps approximately 300 of them on the grounds of the vast Warsaw Zoo. This story is also about her husband Jan, the zookeeper who fights for Poland, is captured, but amazingly is released due to the efforts of a zookeeper in Germany! Jan comes back to fight in the underground Polish Army and he rescues many Jews and uses the zoo as a safe harbor, since the German's are allowing it to remain open on a limited basis. The larger story here is the Warsaw Holocaust which ...

  • Read this!!!!

I bought this for my Mom for her birthday, and I can't wait to steal it back. She loves it and says the writing is excellent and the subject is well covered and fascinating. This book has some photographs in it which help one to grasp the reality of the entire situation which can seem so unreal in our time.It also gives a perspective on the depths to which humans can sink and the heights to which they can rise. Read It!!!!

  • Author is very factual

Fascinating story. Ackerman writes like a journalist and has the details and research you would expect. Our group's quibble with this book is that she writes very dispassionately-- we didn't feel we knew the characters at the end, didn't feel we had a sense of how harrowing this must have been.

  • Compassion

I am really enjoying the book it is refreshing to know some people still care about others no matter what race they are
