Notes
One of the shining lights of '70s, '80s and '90s rock 'n' roll gets his own boxed set, and it's a doozy! The first three discs are devoted to the must-have tracks from all of Tom's albums up through 1993, and then come the real goodies: A disc of rare B-sides and then two discs of unreleased tracks (27 in all!), including Elvis covers, curiosities like a pre-Stevie Nicks version of Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, demos, live takes and more, plus an 84-page color booklet.

  • Live at the Rathskeller!!

This is a exceptional collection of Tom Petty's lifework, even containing some "Mudcrutch",one of his first real bands. LOTS of live material, very nice photos. Petty was based out of Gainesville, Florida at one point, (Go Gators!!), the Rathskeller was a campus bar, many great bands played there, including Petty. This set is for the true fan, greatest performances, including many hits, but really unusual stuff here, showcasing one of the most talented musical groups to ever come out of Florida, and their continuing growth and constant evolution as superlative entertainers. Six disc set, huge booklet, almost all the cover art, other extras, one of the nicest boxed sets to be produced to date from anyone. Not a weak track here, incredible selection, you could play nothing but this set at a ...

  • Tom Petty's "Playbox" box set is better than most!

I have a lot of TP music already, but this set is encoded and mastered in HDCD. My stereo system can decode HDCD, but I never bought such a CD before. I was very happy to find that the sound of the tracks on this set was in my opinion much greater in dynamics than on the same tracks on my older, conventional CDs. Even with this collection of pretty compressed rock tracks, the background noise was quite a bit lower, and the soft parts were actually softer than the loud parts. The fact that dynamic range actually showed up on a rock record was proof to me that excessive compression is not a good thing, because all the music sounds truer to a live show on the HDCD recordings. Good job, and highly recommended both for the sound quality and also for the awesome collection of Tom's music ...

  • Tom Petty rockin thru time

The raw emotion and focused energy are what make Tom and his Heartbreakers as current now as they were then. The book with the history is awseome the photos. "B" sides has funny yet true to life songs "Heartbreaker's Beach Party" Got a Gator on my Lawn. The Song To Bill Graham about the pasture that looked greener turned out to be meaner. Wow, and his work since then is also completly worthy. Can you imagine a kid talking a Judge into letting his son quit college to rock? He keeps it real.

  • Tom Petty 'Playback' a MUST have for any real Petty Fan

Sure, it's nice to hear the hits... but it is so much nicer to have them intermingled with songs that are not heard often, or not at all. I love the tracks that I have never heard the best! The only chance you would have hearing some of these songs is if you listen to Sirus/XM radio's Deep Tracks station. Even then...good luck hearing some of the more rare tracks on this set. Great compelation, a ton of music and a very well put together set with a very nice booklet and extras included in the box.
