A definitive book on an oft-forgotten battle
Barrett Tillman has researched and written a comprehensive account of the Battle of the Philippine sea, which is forgotten by Americans, except for those who fought there and the survivors of those who did not come back. That is tragic, because Philippine Sea was a complete American victory, decided by codebreaking and the courage and skill of her submariners, airmen and anti-aircraft gunners. Japan lost three aircraft carriers in the engagement, and hundreds of her remaining carrier-trained pilots. It was the first carrier battle since Santa Cruz two years before, and the American dominance of the battle showed how much the Americans had learned and the Japanese lost in three years of war in the Pacific. The worm had turned. After Philippine Sea, the Imperial Navy's carriers were no ... The naval air arm that had won victory after victory from Pearl Harbor to Midway was no more. Mr. Tillman's writing style is excellent, his research formidable, his knowledge of the subject comprehensive. It also addresses such vital yet often overlooked subjects as the development of American torpedoes, the types of oil fuel (very important, as that led to the sinking of a Japanese carrier), the training and life of sailors and aviators, and their experiences in battle. One gets the big picture and the small one. The accounts of air battles are gripping. There is also a comprehensive order of battle. My only quibble with the book would be the inflammatory nature of the foreword by Stephen Coonts: it is more about modern American politics and society, and of the "we are not as tough as we were 60 years ago and doomed to failure" style, and I have read and heard enough of such fulminations, made over the centuries by all kinds of people, usually of the late-middle-age and older variety, bemoaning more the loss of their own virility than any real collapse of their civilization. The ancient Greeks and Baylonians made the same complaint as Coonts, and I only make it to my daughter for comedic value, "In my day, I had to walk 12 miles to school, through the snow, uphill, in both directions!" Any serious student of World War II and naval battles should purchase this book.

Good book but not what I was looking for....
It was so detailed with information it did not make very interesting reading as a story. I was looking for inforrmation surrounding my older brother's death as a pilot on the Lexington in the Midway battle.....I did not find much detail about this that was helpful to me.
