About this product

Product Information

Based on a true story culled from hours of interviews by director Bruce Beresford, the film stars Glenn Close as British socialite Adrienne Pargiter. Alerted to the imminence of an invasion of Singapore in 1942, a group of the wives and children of Allied forces quickly crowd aboard a transport. When the ship is bombed, they end up on the island of Sumatra, where they are captured and imprisoned. Conditions in the camp are predictably brutal: food and medicine are difficult to come by, and the living quarters are squalid. One punishment requires a woman to kneel in the hot sun for hours only to fall on a sharp stake if she tires. Given the situation, Pargiter, who is also a musician, decides to organize the women into a vocal orchestra to help raise morale. Although they lack sheet music, Daisy (Pauline Collins), an Australian nurse, is able to re-create scores from memory. Among the reluctant women cajoled into singing are an Australian nurse, Susan McCarthy (Cate Blanchett); a cynical American, Topsy Merritt (Julianna Margulies); and a young British woman, Rosemary Leighton-Jones (Jennifer Ehle). At the first performance of Pargiter's orchestra, the Japanese guards are so moved by the music that they refuse an order to halt it. Close gives another of her typically strong performances.

Avoid . He accepted an offer for 3 items and that I would be able to get combined shipping , he then just cancels and refunds all my orders because he was getting annoyed with me asking for the combined shipping to be reflected on the price I payed so he doesn't have to refund the difference, he abruly just sends me a message that he is canceling my orders and didn't give any explanation why. he is a moody not friendly seller at all . avoid . Refused to sell to me at all over nothing.

RED FLAG Buyer! First, buyer failed to ever make payment on an offer. After allowed period, he sent the offer again and I accepted again. After he completed payment (12 HRs later), he asked if I combined shipping if he bought more items. I Said "Yes, I would refund any difference in overage that he had paid in shipping and combine. Buyer at the point sent multiple lowball offers. I accepted one, and he then sent an insulting low offer. Buyer was a Long Drawn Out issue from the beginning.

A little known part of WW 2 history

I am a modern history buff so especially appreciate pockets of history that I had not known about, of which, I am sure there are a countless number. This story is a prime example of such.

  • Life is far from Paradise in Paradise Road

Paradise Road ia about a group of women who are "detained" by the Japanese during World War II While not precisely called prisoners of war, please make no mistake, that is what they are! After trying to flee from a hotel on a ship with American soldiers, the ship is hit by a submarine. The women are on the Japanese-held island of Sumatra. Conditions are barbaric, to say the least. Some stars are Glenn Close, Jennifer Ehle, Julianna Margulies, Cate Blanchette, and McDormand, who is German and plays up to the Japanese commander whom they are compatriots. The women suffer abuse from their captors. Some of the more attractive women are offered the chance to serve their captors and reap rewards. You can guess Franics what is meant by "serving." This is a gripping true story! Some will ...

  • Not "entertaining", but riveting and inspirational.

Is it entertaining? No. How can a film about prisoners of war be ''entertaining"? It is not a semi-comedy like "Life is Beautiful". There are some lighter moments which bring a few chuckles. But it is riveting, dramatic, inspirational, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is based on true stories of the atrocities committed by the Japanese army against women of all nationalities interned in various camps. If you've watch this movie before on TV or on VHS, be forewarned that two scenes have been cut out on this DVD. One is a minor one, a meeting between a female internee and her husband. The other, however, is a major one, and should never be cut. It is the "stone-tapping" scene by which the women show their defiance and contempt towards their sadistic tormentor. But if ...

  • WOMEN IN POW CAMP WOO CAPTORS WITH ACCAPELLA CHOIR

Billed as based on a true story, I think it's cast of Stars made it the enjoyable movie that it was. The depiction of torturous captivity seemed fairly mild from other true POW camps except for two scenes of horrible punishments for two women. I did enjoy the development of character friendships and difficulties.
