Catherine Cookson wrote about the difficult life of women in Victorian England through the 1940s. Her books did have a romantic theme but the that was only a thread in the wider tapestry of what life struggles girls and women had back then. Poverty (the Rag Nymph, the Dwelling Place), crime (The Secret, the Black Velvet Gown), abuse (the Secret), lack of rights (the Girl), the precarious respectability that could so easily become ruin (the Glass Virgin). Much like Charles Dickens, she wrote reality of the times, not a sugar coated perfection. I agree that some of her themes are very dark but are well worth reading and watching. I personally love The Secret, the Glass Virgin and The Girl. Each of these has a romantic theme that does come with a good if not happy ending.
