Grachan Moncur III is a name that lies deep within the sphere of Modern Jazz music as far as normal path of study for the average jazz student or jazz connoisseur is concerned - and for good reason. While the information & artistry produced by Grachan & his contemporaries is among that of unique origin, technical virtuosity as well as emotionally & creatively innovative; it lies in an area that is largely un-accessible to the general public. For the serious jazz student or listener, however this album is a gem. Surrounded by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Cecil McBee and Anthony Williams, Grachan's compositions seem to be the perfect vehicle for exploration of new territory for these jazz astronauts. This album falls under the category of free-bop, yet the mood of some of the track seems to be very influenced by twentieth century classical music, bordering programmatic music. The album was recorded well, capturing a unique moment within jazz history that one can be glad has been recorded and saved for later. As the sphere of jazz increases in density one would predict that the future might bring a time when jazz listeners & students have advanced in maturity, thus becoming more capable of digesting such artistry due to time & progress. As one of Rudy Van Gelder & Blue note's "Connoisseur CD series" the disc screams "buy me & make me part of your collection." But please...only if you are ready and willing. As with many of modern Jazz music's vehicles for extreme innovation, this album comes at a price, and should contain a warning label for the emotionally & harmonically sensitive "Caution: contains dissonance."Read full review
