    Quite compelling

Written quite well by a veteran who was there - the common soldiers view of that time and those battles. What caught my attention was his detail writing of his "buddies", its all about those men who are standing there at your elbow, sharing those good times and those bad times. Our history channel does not depict the Germans being pushed back from Russia, in such a raw manner, and the winter with its cold, and living it every day. I listened to Marines who had served in Korea and I listened to their stories, of the cold and the deaths in combat. Not an expensive book - I highly recommend it - 1965-69 Sgt USMC 2156167

  • Awesome product-- totally a recommended read!

I bought this book because it was required reading material for a WWII History class I'm currently taking. I didn't think it would be all that interesting upon looking at the book for the first time, but it's an incredible book! It has a very real feeling-- it doesn't feel as though the author has embellished and edited his story a great deal-- it's honest. And it's very interesting-- it's no doubt the best required reading I've done for a history class and I intend to hang onto this one when the semester is over!

  • An incredible story of survival on the Eastern Front

An incredibly riveting story of the absolutely horrifying conditions on the Eastern Front in WWII, as told by a teenage infantryman in an 'elite' German Division (the Grosse Deutscheland). I have read many books on the great European conflict, and this one was by far the hardest to put down. This type of literature really helps to put the often trivial struggles of everyday life that we face today into perspective. Everyone who casually calls for war as a solution to national differences should read this book. It's too bad the leaders of nations can't experience, even briefly, what this man did. Perhaps it would give them pause, and there would be no more wars.

  • eastern front drama from a german soldiers perspective

the book is a easy read.. it focuses on the plight of the soldier instead of specific battles. its not a text book that U would use for research.. its non fiction entertainment

  • Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer (2001)

I have read many, many German memoirs, from members of the U-boat service to the Wehrmacht to the SS, and I have yet to find one as engaging as this. Sajer has seen extensive service on the Eastern front, and he gives a highly detailed and intelligent recounting of those tumultuous years. He is neither politically correct nor incorrect..he is what he was..a soldier of the German army who did what he thought he needed to for the Fatherland. I have read it numerous times and it is well worth owning, reading, and re-reading.
