If you are very tired of the boring, non-entertaining Game Shows on TV, zip back to the mid 1970's for real laughter, real comedy, and no political correctness, just a great EMCEE - Gene Rayburn - an all around amazing actor on TV and Broadway, who is naturally sharp witted and funny....a thousand times better than the 'regulars' of the current shows. A different mix of 6 TV characters will make you watch several of these shows back to back. If you need some great new one-liners, tune in. Comedy was better, life was happier and simpler, and TV was fun back then- today's TV programming is a chore... so many biases, subliminal messages, political views, etc...

Starting back in 1973, the popular daytime game show "Match Game" made its welcome return to network televsion after a long hiatus. The CBS network ran this show from 1973 to 1982, and it also was in syndication during this time as well. This was unlike any other game show airing around that same time, for the fact was that you never knew exactly what the celebrities or even the contestants themselves were going to say. At the height of this craze, host Gene Rayburn would read a comment or a question with a "blank" incorporated within it. The 6 celebrities would write down their reponses and the 2 contestants would take turns trying to correctly guess how many of the stars selcted that response. Among the shows regular group of panelists were Richard Dawson, Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reiley. Many other celebrities also took their places as panelists on the show, as well. The spontanaiety and quotes from these folks are some of the reasons why this show was so popular. It is a blessing to know that a special 4-disc DVD set of this game show has been released. "The Best Of Match Game" gathers together 30 original complete and uncut episodes. Among some of the other stars were Betty White, Jamie Lee Curtis, Richard Gautier, Vicki Lawrence, Jo Ann Pflug, Marcia Wallace, Fannie Flagg, Jimmie Walker and Loretta Swit. There's even an episode featuring a young Kirstie Alley, before she became a household name in television sitcoms. Also featured in this DVD set are exclusive interviews and comments from Brett Somers, a tribute to Gene Rayburn, and even a rare screening of the original 1962 pilot episode. "The Best Of Match Game" presents the best of a game shoe icon.Read full review
What a trip back to the 70s and early 80s. MATCH GAME was THE game show back in the day. It was generally on in the early afternoon, just in time when you got home from school, and for awhile early PM, just before the prime time shows on CBS, There are two box sets. One with two discs and the prime package with four discs, which are fantastic. This box set includes the hard to find 1962 pilot show, THE ONLY SURVIVING copy of the 1960s series. Fortunately, the 70s version in COLOR is intact, complete with select classic episodes, all fronted by the master of game show hosts, Gene Rayburn. If you are a child of the 70s, you gotta add this to your collection. Get it regardless, because its just a neat time capsule.

These four DVD's contain an excellent assortment of episodes featuring all your favorite celebrities: Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Richard Dawson, Betty White, Fannie Flagg, Joyce Bulifant, Bart Braverman and Dick Martin. It was thrilling to relive the magic of this show, especially with Gene Rayburn being funny as the emcee, trading barbs with Brett and Charles. Also I liked hearing Johnny Olson's voice as he introduced each celebrity at the start of the episode: "Get ready to match the stars!" It was also good to see Brett Somers wax nostalgically about her days as a Match Game panelist. I only wish there were more episodes to watch.
I like the older shows and this one is great. I have to say after watching it alot i want to smack a couple stars. Thats just me.
