The Magellan Meridian Gold GPS is an excellent choice for someone who is looking for a GPS unit that is both dependable and easy to operate. Lately alot of people have chosen to go with the newer more popular color units, but I have been very happy with the Meridian Gold and can't see any reason to pay the additional cost of a color unit. Even though the Meridian Gold is no longer being offered by Magellan, there is still alot of new ones for sale on e-bay and other places so finding a good one is not a problem. When using the Meridian Gold in conjunction with a hand held compass,(as I highly reccomend doing because a person should never rely solely on one nevigational source)you will not have any problem navigating to your destination. The viewing screen on the Meridian Gold is large and easy to read. The keyboard is well marked and easy to operate. There is a large list of display options and multiple navigationl screens to choose from. Battery life is excellent on the Meridian Gold, it takes two AA batteries and lasts for up to 14 hours. I have had no problems with the Meridian Gold being able to lock in on satelites quickly, even in remote places. Storing waypoints and routes is easy and retrieving information from the unit is no problem. The unit is simple to operate, even for the beginner, there is really no way you can push the wrong button and get yourself so deep into trouble that you can't get back out; You can always push the escape button, this will return you to the previous screen. There are many accessories available for mounting the unit, such as a bracket for mounting to bicycle handle bars or a window or dash mount for your car or boat, and accessory cables for using your cars lighter socket for supplying power to the unit preserving your batteries while driving. There is a large list of available software that can be loaded into the unit, everything from 3d topo to detailed street maps. The unit comes equipped with a basic street map and uses SD chip to store any additional maps you choose. Loading map information onto an SD chip is fairly quick and easy to do. I primarily use my unit for woods travel, using regular topo software. Having a topo map available, I am able to quickly find the most promising areas to hunt, this has greatly improved my success while hunting. After seeing what I am able to do with my Meridian Gold, my hunting partners have purchased one of their own. I started using GPS for hunting elk many years ago, I am on my fourth unit now and feel the Meridian Gold is my best to date.Read full review
Nice hand held GPS. I bought the GPS used and got the PC cable and cigarette lighter cable so I can download maps and use it mobile. I also purchased the mobile and bicycle mounts. This is a basic unit with a bit more accuracy than comparable brands, but the battery life is less. It generally picks up all available satellites at maximum signal strength and even when it doesn't the accuracy is not affected. An optional SD card can be used with the unit, but try and find any information on the capacity. These units were made and sold when 64MB was the largest available card. I have not experimented to see if it will read a full 512 Mb or higher card. Maps software is available which greatly enhances the very basic preloaded maps. Data entry and customization of the screens is very easy and almost self-explanatory. I chose this GPS because I beleived I would be getting the most bang for my dollar and so far I am right. I know some people with other brands and those do not track as accurately as this one. I gave it a good rating due to the lack of good pre loaded topo maps. Had Magellan not been too cheap to include good maps this would be an excellent rating.Read full review
We already have two just like this except that they are in the colored version. The unit can be a bit complicated to work but keep at it and you will master it. We never did find a website or customer service that could assist us with questions so we ended up asking a GARMIN user. He was very helpful so apparently the units are similar. Watch what you pay and what you are paying for!! The most updated firmwear that we have found is 5.40 version. There are units out there that are terribly out of date (even though they say they just got it, "new in box, just opened and looked at it"). Make sure you get the PC cable to go with the unit. Without that cable you are going to have to buy one to do updates. What they don't tell you: once you get the unit you still have to get an SD card and upload the map of your choice for your area. Without this map you won't be able to find addresses. We used MapSend Direct Route North America and we've been very happy with it. By the way, unless the listing includes MapSend you have to buy that seperate also. Watch ebay listings for this too. We bought our SD cards locally. Since MapSend searchs all like addresses for all cities requested we are going to load less visited states on a separate card so it's easier to find the addres you are looking for. Make sure you get the user manual with the unit. You can download what you need from the Magellan webiste but who wants to print out more than 100 pages. Overall, we are very happy with the unit. There are always drawback with any unit, with this unit we found the screen hard to read at night. Of course we liked the colored version better but the Gold is a very nice unit.Read full review
Magellan makes a good GPS unit, the Meridian Gold is an upgrade from the one I had before. With the card you can put more maps on the machine and have more room for routes and such. Tech support on the other hand is not good. Because this unit is a legacy unit they will not work on them any more, and you have to talk to people in some other country to get anything done. They don't even have a place on their web site to turn in a complaint and forget talking to an American about it. So overall the unit is good and has all the features needed to get you in and out of just about anywhere you would want to go, but because the support is not there and you cannot understand what those folks are saying I will be looking at different companies if I ever decide to buy another GPS Unit Gary F. Very good price point for a rock solid GPS. If you want to load topographical maps onto the unit you will require a Windows XP PC to install the Topo software, as this software is unusable on Windows 10. Also, if the GPS unit is not running firmware 5.43 or above, you cannot connect the serial cable to the unit. However, the work-around is to put the SDCARD in a card reader and copy the maps directly onto it. This will require you to put the GPS serial number into the Topo software.

This review is for a 6 year old used Meridian Gold GPS Receiver. It is in better shape than the broken Meridian Color that it replaced with much less use than the one that helped break a fall on a mountain trail. After heavily using the Meridian Color for years, the Meridian Gold was easy to learn as it only has a couple of different "features." This was also the reason I chose to purchase the Meridian Gold in the first place. The durability and features continue to make this discontinued model a much better buy than all of the brand new portable GPS receivers that I have seen available from any manufacturer. This line of GPS receivers from Magellan (Gold, Color) is the gold standard in my opinion. Combined with Magellan's Topographic MapSend software, (I also use a 128 Mb SD card that inserts into the back of the unit in the battery compartment) this unit can give you a detailed topographic map view that is ideal for hiking and other off road adventures, and detailed highway and street mapping is also included that will get you to your off road location. Elevation and GPS sensitivity is excellent in almost all conditions, and is even good under the forest canopy. The unit's software is only capable of using 64 Mb of the SD card, but the 128 Mb card works. One of my favorite features is the backtrack "track" that can be downloaded back to a computer and replayed, printed, or generally study the speed and speed variations, elevation and other detail. The track can also be imported to Google Earth and displayed over satellite or aerial photos. Of course, finding your way back by following your "trail" is convenient also. Users can set up to 500 waypoints "any spot you want to mark on a map" with ability to name it, choose the icon to mark it and make notes about it. This is all saved and accessible from the menu. This makes a great way to mark geocaches, fishing spots, trail heads and whatever you want to reference for future use. The view of the map can be North up, or you can have the map turn to track up. If you are used to studying a map, the North up option works, but if you are driving or wanting to see what is ahead, the track up feature is helpful, especially with the taller than wide display. There are 8 different grey-scale screens of information available, toggle through them all or choose which ones you use most and hide the rest. The main screen is the map, with heading and speed indicated at the bottom. The in/out buttons at the top of the keypad allow zooming into or out from the map, changing the scale and how much detail is included. The next screens are the compass screen, Go To screen, coordinates and elevation screen, another Go To screen with directional heading, another Go To screen showing distance heading and bearing to point chosen, Analog speedometer and trip odometer with heading and distance, a GPS sat map showing which sats are available, which are being used, and the strength of the signal. This sat page also has the power indicator for the state of the batteries. The Meridian Gold uses 2 AA batteries which will last for 8-14 hours. These are durable rubber coated, water resistant, easily gripped trail and topo map information powerhouses. Just don't keep it in your BACK pants pocket as you slide down a rocky path, or you will be looking for another "state of the art" GPS receiver like this one. Tough as they are, the glass screen won't withstand a direct blow between buttocks and boulders.Read full review
Great little GPS. Our first and easy to use with a little reading in the manual. Had the most featues compared to others at the same or greater price. If anything the only thing I dislike is the compass. It does not locate unless moving. This is explained in the manual. There are other more expensive models that have and active compass when standing still. All in all this is a great item tell friens to buy one.
This is an outstanding recreational GPS. I have used it hunting and work for at least 4-5 years. The Mapsend maps are a little out of date, but this model was not made for vehicle navigation, although you can use it as such. I have also used it at work extensively for preliminary engineering and design survey work (developing large public works projects). There is a free 3rd party software that allows you to sync with the terreserver aerial photos so you can plan or review your trips on the computer. I have just bought my second one because my first one is beginning to get worn out from use and I wanted to get another while I still could. These clearance prices are unbelievable. The reviews on newer models still indicate that color screens are hard to read in the sunlight. (DO NOT get a Meridian Color. The power consumption is WAY to significant and you cannot see the screen in the sunlight.)Read full review
For the money one of the best recievers on the used market now since Magellan no longer sells this GPS. Pretty easy to navigate IF YOU READ THE MANUAL. Some maps are erroneous but I have seen this in complaints of all lower priced gps products. Purchasing the updated maps are necessary but the new maps are very accurate. Thales Navigation is difficult to deal with when it comes to repair, warranty work or technical questions. The key is be patient and polite on the phone with them.
