As Malcolm McDowall is on record as saying: he accepted the role because Gore Vidal wrote the script. However, Bob Guccione, founder of Penthose magazine, took control of the movie, virtually sacking the director, Tinto Brass, and what resulted was nothing but a loose plot surrounded by excessive doses of Penthouse Pet-suppled unsimulated sex with lashings (so to speak) of cruelty and blood-letting. The main players, Peter O'toole, Malcolm McDowall and Helen Mirren are adequate, obviously humouring the director, but they flounder in the mish-mash script and the bacchanalia writhing around them. The production qualities of this digitally restored DVD are woeful. It is disconcertingly blurry and the sound is poor. I've been curious about this DVD for a while, because it is legendarily bad. Sometimes really bad is so bad it's good. This is not one of those times.Read full review

This movie captures one of the most horrific moments in the history of the Roman Empire. One man desperate for power at any cost, at the expense of his own people.
