Great option for PHii fresh water conversion
The Fresh Head conversion kit for the Raritan PH/PHII marine toilets is a quality kit as expected from Raritan, and it does make for a more pleasant head-usage experience. The kit contains a replacement for the pump body (perfect fit on existing toilet base) which uses pressurized fresh water (in our case either from our on-board tank or municipal water supply) to fill the bowl with water. According to Raritan, the water pressure can range from 5PSI to 150PSI. A spring-loaded lever opens the flow of the pressurized water. The spring-loaded lever mechanism failed within the first year and cost more than $80 to replace. Fresh water is fed using a hose tee'd into your boat's pressurized water system; we tee'd into the sink cold water supply. We used 1/2” water hose and nylon barbs ... We used 1/2” water hose and nylon barbs from West Marine, but I think a braided stainless supply line would be better (and probably cheaper). Also included in the kit is a flapper valve; it looks just like the existing flapper valve, but we used it anyway. The joker valve is integrated into the rubber hose connector on the back of the pump body. Raritan claims that the joker valve is “full sized” and as such provides better service. The joker valve failed within the first year. The discharge elbow can be rotated, but Raritan cautions that the joker valve assembly should not be subjected to any force that could cause it to bend (like a too long or too short discharge hose). The biggest challenge we had was replacing the “spud” on the back of the bowl. I had to call Raritan to find out how to get the old one out. The spuds, which are not interchangeable, both have straight edges on a round fitting and in order to remove the old spud, you need to get the straight edge lined up with the top of the hole in the bowl and push down hard on the spud. It took several tries but it finally popped out. We did not remove the bowl from the toilet base so we couldn't see anything. How it works: use the spring-loaded lever to fill the bowl with water, then move the flush handle back and forth to cause the diaphragm pump to empty the bowl. With about 1/3 bowl full of water, it takes less than 10 strokes to empty it. The flush handle has a lock that should be employed when moving or heeling to prevent backflow from the discharge hose. We had a bit of trouble getting that lock to engage as it's a tight fit. The pump is quieter and much easier to use than what it replaced. The instructions are pretty clear. I do wish that the flush handle was longer (it has a short integral extension tube) as flushing does require bending down just like the old pump. It should be noted that you MUST have pressurized water to use the FreshHead. A FreshHead service kit is available from Raritan and currently it's 40% less expensive than the standard service kit.
