      A Great Way to Get Started with French Fiddling

      The 227 tunes are organized by region and then by time signature, just as a fiddler wants. There are a lot of 3/8 tunes, which are not so common in other traditions and even some 5/8 tunes that I went to right off. The tunes are well laid out on the pages and easy to read, with plenty of space for added bowing marks or ornamentations. There is some guidance to get you started with the bowing: initial bow directions and some indications of where slurs are appropriate. The enclosed CD gives an idea of tempo and rhythm for 48 of the tunes, played through once each. There are four pages of introduction to the regions of France and their characteristic dances. Also a page listing recordings and books for further exploration of French fiddling.
