Pros + Creepy monsters, effects, & atmosphere. + Not the same Silent Hill. New back story that explores more of Silent Hill than before. + Better combat system but still no where near perfect. Cons - 1st person gameplay tends to be a bit sluggish & makes things harder on the player. - Only one boss battle. - Some puzzles can be difficult to solve. Comments Silent Hill 4 explores a variety of creepy levels & has quite a new style when it comes to the demonic creations within the game. The style leans much more towards Japanese horror films. There are many creepy sights to see in the game that may shock you. Verdict Must play for any survival horror fan. Must have for any Silent Hill fan.
I understand that this game should have murky climate, but I belive that programmers didn't put much effort in this game. It seems that the engine, graphics etc., doesn't differ from previous releases. The camera sucks almost 80% of the time. Controls are fine. At one point in the game I got stuck!!!, and I do not mean that I didn't know what to do, and I dont' mean that the game froze. At some point of the game you get to the room with a table (looks like birtday party was there) and a ghost pinned to the floor by that special sword for ghost. I wanted the approach the table from the other side, so I walked between the ghost and the wall. I was not able to get out of there. I had to restart the game. Such things are not acceptable. Anyways, the biggest cons fo this game is the camera and graphics.Read full review
Ah the Silent Hill series....Silent Hill 4 must easily be one of the best choices I've ever made in reguards to purchaseing a game in my entire life. Upon starting out, you might think you've fallen into Apartment Hill 4: The Real Apartment Simulator. The first person vew caught me off guard at first, forcing you to start out the game in first person was a good idea, considerring the alternative; throw you into it later(bad). The game gives you plenty of time to get the first person controlls down before finally dumping you into a really big mess, not in a bad way, just a dark, dank, bloody, slicky way, which is definately what the Silent Hill fans where more than expecting -myself included. The story shown off here is huge, heavy, richly detailed, and full of twists and turns. this effectively keeps you getting knocked off your rocker as suprise after suprise gets thrown your way. Through the course of the game, you'll have to go to and from your appartment in a transdimensional sort of way, as your appartment is the only way to save your game. While in your appartment, you see through the character's eyes, giving these segments of the game higher scare potential than the rest. And outside the appartment, the added space is taken full advantage of with a fully controllabe third person camera. Even though the appartment is only a small space, you WILL be scared more by it than the outer worlds the game has you explore. As I just said, close quarters + first person = clostrophobia-induced fear....a fear I've never really felt in a video game before this. -A word to the wise: yes, that is a skinned cat in the fridge. The controlls and battle system allowing you to use and explore SH4 are quite a love story in and of themselves. You'll find yourself being baffled by them numerous times in the beginning of the game, where as you'll be lovung them in the future of movment into the plot and increasing dificulty of battle. I felt the battle mechanics where more of a simulator than an actual action-oriented controll setup. I felt asthough I was truly fighting despirately to stay alive in most cases throughout gameplay. That is how one should feel. In real life you wouldn't have rambo-nerves when fighting a dead man who's floating in the air, making choaking noises and moaning while on fire. This was, in the end, a fully enjoyable experience on my part, and if you have the constatutions to face a world where true fear is, and you want to know true fear for the first time in your life, then you've made a good choice by considerring this one as a potential buy. I could not recommend it more highly. I give this a 5 0f 5, for reminding me of my mortallity in such an impressive way. Go buy a PS3 yall, Blank DurahanRead full review
The graphics were OK, but nothing special. The music was pretty good at setting the mood, but that's about it for what's right with the game. The game play on the PC is a royal pain because of the awkward ways of using inventory and picking up/using an item. The story itself isn't very interesting and you can get away from almost any monster simply by running away. If you're a fan of the Silent Hill series you'll likely get something out of this game, but for everyone else I would highly recommend Silent Hill 2 & 3, Doom 3, or Quake 3 & 4 ahead of this version. Hopefully SH4 won't be the death of the Silent Hill series and SH5 will have a much improved story and PC gameplay than this game does.
I wanted to buy this product because i love the silent hill stuff... unfortunatly for me, itdidn't work on my computer, but it did on my friends. after loading it in it works great, and i would reccomend it for anyone who has the same taste. -Aspen Liu
