WD RE4 drives are sturdy, and reliable in general and this entry into the field is all that and more. PRO: It combines great price point with reasonable storage size. For those of us who need a small RAID Array, (or even JBOD), but can not afford the larger more expensive drives, this solution fits the bill. They are Enterprise Drives meaning that they are built to last through quite a LOT of operating hours before failure. CON: Because these drives are used, they have a lot of operating hours already logged on them. That said, it has been my experience that if they have not failed so far, they are good for quite a few more operating hours before they do fail. OTHER: I have 5 or 6 of the 1Tb line of these drives and they have given NO problems in the 2 or so years I have had them. I am moving to the 2TB line because of the need to slightly expand my storage capacity.Read full review

I consider the WD RE3 and RE4 drives to be one of the gold standards for disk drives. These were designed to go into servers, so their reliability and lifetime is better than consumer-grade drives. They are also not shingled recording, which I/M/O greatly improves both speed and data reliability. The only drawback is that WD doesn't make them any more and they're only available used. Used drives are always something of a crapshoot, so if you buy them used the first thing you must do is run the WD full diagnostic, then do a full erase, then a full surface test, and then format with bad block detection enabled. It takes two days but at the end you can expect the drive to last a long time without problems.
