Once I learned how to unlock the scanner (I found instructions on line), set up was simple - just plug it in, insert a toner cartridge, add paper and program it to do what you want it to do. It worked as well as my older Dell MFP 1600n - with the same print quality, scanning capability and multitasking feature. In fact, the only reason I looked for a used one was because the new Dell Multi-Function Printers such as the E515dw and the H815dw, can't perform the Tel/Fax function at all. Dell's U.S. based technical staff worked online using a Web-Connect technology for several days, 1st trying to get the new printers to maintain a wireless connection, and 2nd to set up those new machines to differentiate a phone call from fax telemetry. It didn't matter how they set up the new machines, they had no success with the Tel/Fax functionality. Dell's only remedy is to install a dedicated fax line - spend at least an additional $20/month. Both new Dell printers have slightly better print quality and scanner sharpness and a lot of new features including wireless connectivity and cloud based functionality. Of the two, only the E515dw was able to stay wirelessly connected to my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537. Using a single phone line, Dell's 1600n MFP does allow a phone call to get picked up without turning on it's own Fax telemetric "handshake" (without disrupting a call) - all without having to use a dedicated fax line.Read full review

Assured 'all working order' prior to purchase. Arrived making odd noises and document feeder for copy feature inoperative. Printing a 1/4" ink void stripe down the page after replacing empty toner cartridge. Draw your own conclusions.

It's nice to have the economy of an inkjet with the print quality of laser. Once you get your first toner cartridge (find one on Ebay), then do your own toner refills. The controls are one-touch and organized well. Very good compatibility between printer and software utilities. Easy to set up without a manual. Scanner needs a tool to save scans as jpeg rather than bitmaps. It has the feel of a business machine when you make a photocopy, unlike some of the junk inkjet MFPs I've had. Also, very good support from Dell online. FYI: the scanner lock is inside the bay on the upper left (blue switch) - pull it forward to unlock. I had to search around for that a bit. Also, when finished with the software installation, uninstall the toner management system (through control panel - add/remove programs). It's just a way for Dell to make extra bucks off you.Read full review
I bought this to replace a twelve year old HP LJ3100 simply because HP does not make an XP, Vista or Win7 driver for it. The 1600n control panel is not intuitive. Takes a good deal of time to figure out how to navigate. User preferences are stored in volatile memory. If the power goes out and comes back on, the 1600n reverts back to the default ‘User Preference’ settings. Once that happens, the machine will take any call on the first ring and, as far as I can tell, there is no way to take the line back and answer the incoming voice call. The ‘Cancel Button’ does not work and this will make you miss important phone calls until you re-set your user preferences. The only viable remedy is to instal a UPS to keep the memory alive during a power failure. If you know of another ‘workaround’, let me know. Please? This machine did not come with the Dell Driver and Utility disk. The downloaded Dell 1600n driver is for the printer only. To use the scanner, you must buy scanner software. Originally, Dell shipped this printer with an issue of ScanSoft PaperPort V9 and Adobe Photoshop bundled on the Drivers and Utilities disk. Near as I can tell, Nuance Technologies bought up ScanSoft in 07 or 08 and their subsequent versions (10, 11 & 12) of PaperPort are crap. The original, ScanSoft V9 version of PaperPort is still available for about $30 plus shipping (google ScanSoft PaperPort V9 to find it) and it works well. But only with WinXP. It does not work with Vista or Win7 (or so it appears). For Vista and 7, you are forced to use the newer Nuance versions. My first attempt to connect the 1600n was via the network. But even with the 1600's proper IP address, my PC could not find it on the network. I then connected with USB (2.0, not 1.1) and that works well. I don't work with PDF files. So I can't tell you which issue/version of Adobe software to go after. If you do work with PDF files, I would think your current Adobe app would be compatable. To sum up, the ‘glitchy’ networking, lack of a intuitive user interface, non-volatile memory and a complete set of robust drivers for full function make this AIO printer inferior to an HP. It is worth the money, but you better be well versed in IT procedures and software procurement if you want to make full use of all it’s functions. My configuration: Dell XPS M1710 (stolen from Dr Sheldon Cooper), Windows XP MCE. dull-guyRead full review
The previous owner took excellent care so it may work for another 5 years or so for light office printing needs.
